IRVING, Texas — Dixie State’s men’s golf team opened the final month of the 2018-19 regular season with a t-third place finish at the Dallas Baptist Patriot Classic on Tuesday at the Hackberry Creek Country Club. The result was the Trailblazers’ fourth top-five team showing of the season and the seventh top-10 finish in eight total events overall.
The Trailblazers (299-295-306) began the day with a two-shot lead on the 17-team field, but could not build on the advantage as they carded a final round 18-over par 306 to join Central Missouri (293-303-304) at plus-36 900 for the tournament. Texas A&M-Commerce (299-302-284) shot a team-tourney low 4-under 284 over its final 18 holes to vault from fifth place to the team event title at plus-21 885, 13 strokes clear of runner-up St. Edwards (299-300-299-898, +34).
Sophomore Spencer Wallace (78-69-75) and freshman Triston Gardner (72-75-75) each penciled in three birdies on their scorecards on their way to matching 3-over 75s as the duo placed t-ninth on the leaderboard at plus-6 222. For Gardner it was his third top-10 individual showing of the season, while Wallace collected his first top-10 in his seventh event this year.
Senior Nicklaus Britt (73-75-81) finished tied with four others for 25th-place at plus-13 229, followed by freshman Noah Schone (76-76-78) in t-30th at plus-14 230, and sophomore Brock Nielson (78-79-79) placed t-52nd at plus-19 235.
Dixie State will close the 2018-19 regular season next Monday and Tuesday, April 8-9, at the Western New Mexico Mustang Intercollegiate, which will be played at the Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Ariz.
