Utah State men’s tennis to close out home portion of schedule with pair of conference matches

LOGAN — Utah State men's tennis (14-7, 2-0 MW) will close out the home portion of its schedule with a pair of conference matches against Air Force (9-8, 0-2 MW) on Friday, April 5, at 3 p.m., at the Outdoor Tennis Courts, and New Mexico (7-6, 2-0 MW) on Sunday, April 7, at 1 p.m.

Utah State (14-7, 2-0 MW) is led by sophomore Felipe Acosta, who is 16-2 and leads the team with four match-clinching victories this season. Overall, Acosta has clinched the match for the Aggies five times over the course of his career. Additionally, Acosta has surpassed his singles win total from last season (16) and currently has 21. Junior Duro Opacic has 14 wins on the season and is currently tied for seventh in single-season singles wins with 23.

Air Force leads the overall series, 7-6, but the Aggies will be looking for their fifth-consecutive win against Falcons. Air Force is led by Paul Hendrix, who is 15-7, while the doubles team of Hendrix and Jamie Bautista sit at 10-4 at the No. 3 spot.

Utah State and New Mexico have split the series, 3-3, as the Aggies won the last matchup with a 4-1 road win on April 13, 2018. New Mexico is led by Facundo Bermejo and Stepan Holis, who are 6-3, while the doubles team of Bermejo and Dominic West are 8-4 at the bottom two spots.

During the fall season, Utah State freshman Isaac Arevalo Gómez defeated New Mexico's Dominic West 6-2, 6-3 in the singles final at the Midland Invitational in Midland, Texas, becoming the first Aggie since Tomas Cosmai in 2014 to capture a fall tournament title.
