It was a Friday night classic at Maple Mountain High School in Spanish Fork when the Eagles hosted Corner Canyon in week two of high school football.

With just eight seconds left on the clock, Maple Mountain quarterback and BYU commit Jaren Hall threw a touchdown strike in the middle of the end zone to lift the Eagles to a thrilling 31-30 victory.

Maple Mountain is a relatively new high school in Utah, and in the short seven years that the Eagles have existed, this is one of, if not the biggest victory in their history.

“It means the world to these guys that have worked so hard,” head coach Brad Burtenshaw said. “We’ve been through some struggles in past years to have a chance to play a team like Corner Canyon and do well against them, compete against them, and even win a few of these. It’s great.”

Though it was all smiles for the Maple Mountain players and coaches after the win, it wasn’t that way throughout the early parts of the game. Hall was the hero at the end, but he put his team in a tough spot in the first half by throwing four interceptions after not surrendering one all of last week’s game.

The Chargers took advantage and led much of the way, carrying a 24-13 advantage heading into the locker rooms. After a halftime readjustment, Hall and the rest of the Eagles came out in the second half holding on to the football and making the right plays at the right time.

“We came out of the locker room, my team told me, ‘We’ve got your back Jaren, just go do your thing,’” Hall said.

Maple Mountain moves to 2-0 on the year with the win and will put its undefeated record on the line when it travels to North Sanpete next week. Meanwhile, Corner Canyon remains winless and will look for its first win next week at Orem.
