Draper Fire Department remembers fallen battalion chief a year after his death

Children play on a bench dedicated to the memory of Draper Battalion Chief Matt Burchett at the Maple Hollow Trailhead in Draper on Friday. Burchett, 42, was killed on Aug. 13, 2018, after being hit by falling tree debris after thousands of gallons of retardant were dropped on the area where he was helping battle the Mendocino Complex Fire in Northern California. The bench, installed by the Draper Fire Department, was dedicated during a ceremony attended by Burchett’s family, friends and co-workers. The bench was placed at the Maple Hollow Trailhead because is close to where Burchett and his family lived and in the beautiful outdoors where the family loved to spend time together.
