In a battle between two Utah Jazz players’ national teams at the FIBA World Cup in China on Monday morning, Joe Ingles and Australia outlasted Rudy Gobert and France 100-98 in what is considered an upset for the Boomers.

With the game tied at 96 and 29 seconds remaining, Gobert fouled out. It was his fourth foul in the final 5:20 of the contest. Trailing 99-98 with four seconds left, France still had a chance at the end to win, but couldn’t convert.

Australia’s Mitch Creek, who played for the Jazz’s summer league team in 2017, scored the final point of the game on a free throw.

Ingles, who hadn’t scored much in the Boomers’ previous few games, led the way with 23 points and added two assists, two rebounds and a steal in 34 minutes. Former University of Utah star Andrew Bogut added seven points, six rebounds, three assists and a block in 13 minutes.

Gobert scored eight points with six assists, four rebounds and two blocks in 32 minutes in the loss.

Also on Monday, Team USA pulled away late to beat Brazil 89-73. It led by 11 entering the fourth quarter and stretched the lead to 21 halfway through the frame. Jazz star Donovan Mitchell scored six points to go along with seven assists, six rebounds and a block in 22 minutes of play.

There will be another showdown between Jazz players on Wednesday, as Team USA will face France. Australia will play Czech Republic in its next game, also on Wednesday. The Team USA-France game is set to tip off at 5 a.m. MT, while the Australia-Czech Republic game is set for 7.

On Sunday, former Logan and BYU standout Charles Abouo led Ivory Coast in an 80-71 loss to Korea. Abouo finished with 15 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals in 33 minutes.

Ivory Coast will not advance in the tournament.
