The Ogden story
Steve Ogden did not become a flooring and design success overnight — but it was definitely in his blood from an early age.
At 12 years old, he started working in his father’s floor covering store and got his first experience laying carpet. After serving a church mission and playing football at BYU with his brother, Ogden finished college and went into the carpet business with his father in California.
Deciding carpets weren’t for him, Ogden moved to Utah to “get out of the carpet business.” But when his new business ventures failed, he returned to what he knew best — laying carpet. Soon, Ogden opened his own store and asked his father to send him carpet for his new business.
Things took off quickly after Ogden ran a TV ad.
“The first week we were on (TV), we had so many people come to the store, we sold everything we had in two days,” said Ogden. “I said, ‘Just stop the ads because I don’t have anything else to sell!’ And it just took off from there.”
Realizing he would need more space to meet demands, Ogden began opening up new locations throughout Utah. Over four decades, the business has grown from one store to 11.
