Missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are dropped off at the Missionary Training Center in Provo on Wednesday, March 11, 2020. The church announced Wednesday that April’s general conference sessions will be held virtually, some incoming missionaries will train remotely, and gatherings of multiple congregations in some areas will be postponed due to the spread of COVID-19.

SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is sending home all senior missionaries serving in Europe as well as all young missionaries with serious or chronic medical conditions, according to a news release issued Thursday

“These missionaries, who are at a higher risk for complications from COVID-19, come from 22 missions across Europe,” the statement said. “After returning home, they will self-isolate for 14 days. These missionaries will not receive a new temporary assignment but will be considered for reassignment once the COVID-19 situation abates.”

President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he had suspended travel from Europe to the United States for all foreign nationals. The decision does not affect “legal permanent residents, (generally) immediate family members of U.S. citizens, and other individuals who are identified in the proclamation,” according to a news release issued by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
