This LASIK alternative may be a good option for you

For years, people with vision problems have been limited to few options for correction, including glasses, contact lenses, or laser-assisted in situ keratomileuses (commonly known as LASIK), surgery.

Contacts and glasses are excellent for your younger years while eyes are changing, but if you’re looking for a long-term, permanent fix for your vision, LASIK has long been the go-to solution.

Successful for millions, there are still many who are are not good candidates for LASIK due to thin corneas, severely dry eyes, extreme prescription strengths, or other eye conditions, leaving them with few options. Until now.

Implantable contact lenses, or ICL for short, has been around since the early 90s but is gaining momentum for those with unique eye conditions as a great alternative option to LASIK for permanent vision correction.

The ICL procedure is quick, easy, and will have you seeing better than ever, even within a few days after the surgery. Unlike LASIK, no corneal tissue is removed. Instead, a tiny 3.5mm biocompatible lens is inserted behind your iris, essentially giving your permanent contact lenses, but without any dry-eye syndrome, halos, poor night vision, or other complications common with LASIK or wearing traditional contacts.

Almost immediately after the 30-minute procedure is over you’ll be enjoying the benefits of ICL. Here are a few notable benefits.

Improved quality of life

If you’ve spent years wearing glasses or contacts, you know how much of hassle they can be. Rinsing, ordering, moistening, cleaning, disinfecting—contacts and glasses are hardly convenient.  With Visian ICL, you’ll enjoy the ease of no daily maintenance, and will be able to participate in all your favorite activities, including swimming and sports, with no concerns.

Hoopes Vision reports a satisfaction rating of over 99% for those who have had the ICL procedure, so rest assured you are going to be satisfied with the results and the improved quality of your life.

Dramatically improved vision

With Visian ICL you will be seeing better than you ever have. Near perfect vision with excellent night vision attributes, it’s no wonder the procedure is popular for those in the military

“The clarity of the Visian ICL is just unbelievable. It’s very crisp and clear,” said Moche Chalem, a patient at Hoopes Vision

Where LASIK candidates are limited if they have very high prescriptions, Visian ICL is able to correct and reduce nearsightedness of up to -20D.

Another patient at Hoopes Vision, Dr. James Huang, said, “I am still seeing 20/10 which is twice as sharp as the gold-standard of 20/20 vision.”

Invisible comfort

If the thought of wearing a permanent contact lens sounds uncomfortable or unattractive, don’t worry. Visian ICL lenses are made from Collamer, a material that works in harmony with your natural eye. Essentially, you won’t be able to feel them at all once they’re in. Additionally, the lenses are placed behind the iris, making them invisible.

Hoopes Vision refers to the Visian ICL procedure as “additive vision correction.” However, and unlike LASIK, in the event of a major prescription change or availability of new vision correction options, Visian ICL is completely removable, ensuring that you and your doctor are able to adapt your changing needs, as well as new technologies that become available.

Some patients, like Elysha Boyd who had her procedure done locally at Hoopes Vision, are eligible for both LASK and ICL, but choose ICL due to its additive, reversible nature.

“I was eligible for both LASK and the ICLs, but I do have thin corneas, so…(I chose) the ICL because it’s adding something to my eye and not reshaping my cornea,” said Boyd.

UV Protection

An unanticipated benefit of going with Visian ICL is that by inserting the Collamer lens, you will receive an added barrier of UV protection from the sun’s harmful rays. The unique composition of the lens material will provide UV protection while allowing natural, safe light to pass through to your eye unaffected.

Are you a good candidate?

If you are someone who isn’t a LASIK candidate due to thin corneas, severely dry eyes, or a higher degree of myopia, Visian ICL might be for you.

To determine if you are a good candidate for ICL, a thorough vision correction examination is required.

Hoopes Vision in Draper, Utah office provides complimentary vision correction surgery examinations for patients who have not had previous vision correction surgery and are now considering ICL.

To be considered, you will need to be over 18 years old with a stable prescription, have moderate to extreme nearsightedness, and/or astigmatism, and have healthy eyes without disease or serious ailments.
