High school girls tennis: 5A region recaps, defending state champ Timpview the favorite again at this weekend’s state tourney

The 5A girls tennis state championships will be held Thursday and Saturday at Salt Lake City’s Liberty Park.

Defending state champion Timpview enters the state tournament as the favorite after capturing the Region 8 title by winning four of the five positions. The other four region champs were Woods Cross, Highland, Uintah and Spanish Fork.

Woods Cross was the only region champ to earn the No. 1 seed in all five positions.

There will be a new first singles state champ this season as last year’s champ, Woods Cross’ Macy Richards, graduated.

The tourney gets underway Thursday with first-round matches, but there will be five play-in matches in all five positions on Tuesday at Brighton at 11 a.m. The play-ins became necessary this year as there are five regions in 5A.
