The first day of the 6A state girls golf tournament at The Ridge Golf Course in West Valley City concluded Monday afternoon with defending champions Lone Peak clinging to the lead.

The Knights recorded a first round score of 325 and currently hold a five-stroke lead over Davis and Corner Canyon that are in a two-way tie for second place with a score of 330.

Lone Peak, Davis and Corner Canyon have separated themselves from the rest of the field, as fourth place Herriman currently sits 16 strokes outside of the top three with a first round score of 346.

Davis shot a field-best score of 168 on the first nine holes, but the Knights rallied by shooting their own field-best score of 156 over the last nine holes to gain their five stroke lead. Lone Peak’s impressive team score on the back nine was aided by the individual performance of Berlin Long, who shot a 3-under par score of 33 over the final nine holes.

Long’s impressive back nine wasn’t enough for her to take over the individual leaderboard though. Herriman’s Millie Terrion led all golfers after the opening round with a score of 73, giving her a two-stroke cushion over Long and a five-stroke cushion over third place Cassidy Denning of Westlake.

Terrion recorded a birdie on 33% of the holes over the first round.

Davis’ Bridgette Volk sunk a hole-in-one on the 18th hole, which helped the Darts secure the second place position heading into the final round.

All eyes will be on the Knights heading into the second round as they look to maintain their grip on the lead and defend their title.
