Marvel fans got a new trailer for the upcoming feature film “Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” and it featured one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s oldest villains.
The trailer, which you can watch below, shows Shang Chi (Simu Liu) learning about the 10 legendary rings that give special abilities and powers.
During one scene, we can see what looks like Shang Chi battling in a cage match with a hulkingly big figure. Indeed, the creature looks just like the Hulk and appears to be quite the cage fighter.
Social media quickly identified the huge creature as Abomination — a creature that is somewhat like the Hulk and appeared in “The Incredible Hulk,” the second-ever Marvel Cinematic Universe film released in 2008.
Who is Abomination?
In “The Incredible Hulk,” Capt. Emil Blonsky took a dose of the Super Soldier Serum. But he still lost a fight with the Hulk. So he took some of the Hulk’s gamma-infused blood and became a Hulk-sized character named Abomination.
In the film, he destroyed Harlem and became a villain for the Hulk. Hulk eventually defeated him. According to the Marvel Wiki page, the World Security Council wanted the creature to be a member of the Avengers. However, agent Phil Coulson and Tony Stark opted to bring Bruce Banner’s Hulk into the team.
Interestingly, S.H.I.E.L.D. took Abomination into custody and sent him to a cryostasis facility in Alaska. We haven’t seen him since, until this trailer.
We don’t know much about his role. It’s a nice callback to a previous Marvel Cinematic Universe film. And it gives even more meaning to one of the older films, “Incredible Hulk,” which came out 13 years ago. We may not know much yet, but we’ll definitely get another look at Abomination in “Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.”
