Day 1 of the 6A girls tennis tournament wrapped up Thursday afternoon at Liberty Park in Salt Lake City, and defending champion Skyridge has its eyes set on the repeat title.

With an undefeated day on the court, the Falcons lead the pack with 10 points heading into Saturday’s final day of competition. Across its 10 opening-day matches, Skyridge only lost 14 sets as a team.

“We had an objective to come in and make sure we won both matches in every line, and we were able to do that,” Skyridge head coach Ben Armstrong said. “We’re exactly where we need to be going into Day 2.”

Though the body of work put forth by the Falcons leading up to the state tournament proved that they were more than capable of winning another state title, there were still questions about how Skyridge’s youth (three freshmen participating in the tournament) would respond to their first exposure to state tournament play.

While the Falcons may be young in class, they showed that they have experience beyond their years. Armstrong said the freshmen players all had significant tournament experiences like Thursday’s, and the rest of the team all was a part of last year’s championship campaign to some degree.

Armstrong added that if his players simply play the way they’ve played all season long, they should be able to close out the tournament on Saturday.

“With the state tournament, there’s always going to be added pressure, though a lot of times it’s pressure that the girls put on themselves,” Armstrong said. “We’re preaching to them that they just need to go out and play the type of tennis they’ve played all year.”

Right behind the Falcons in the team scoring is Layton (8 points), Lone Peak (7 points) and Farmington (6 points), with American Fork and West (5 points each) rounding out the top five.

While the two-point cushion will be a luxury heading into Day 2, the Falcons know that things won’t come easy in a field that Armstrong said he feels is more competitive than last year’s state tournament.

A key matchup to watch in Saturday’s semifinals will be first doubles between Skyridge’s Savannah Johnson and Kylee Sperry and Layton’s Tess Christopulos and Victoria Cooksey.

The match will be the only semifinal in which the first and second-place squads will face off head-to-head, as Layton will look to gain ground and Skyridge will look to gain separation.

“Layton is going to play great,” Armstrong said of the team on his squad’s heels. “We run into them only once in the semifinals, and that’s that first doubles match. That is going to be an epic match because one way or the other, that could be a very defining match for either team.”

Although more points and championships will be at stake in Saturday’s Day 2 matchups, Armstrong emphasized that it won’t require anything extravagant from his players, who have been playing championship-caliber tennis all season.

“They just need to come out and be themselves. They don’t need to feel like they need to be heroes or do something different than they’ve already done. They’ve just got to come out and execute and they’ll be just fine,” Armstrong said.
