Dr. Anthony Fauci, the White House medical adviser on the novel coronavirus, recently told MSNBC that children are vulnerable to the coronavirus — and they should wear masks because of it.
Does Dr. Fauci recommend face masks for kids?
“Unvaccinated children of a certain age greater than 2 years old should be wearing masks,” Fauci said on MSNBC. “No doubt about that. That’s the way to protect them from getting infected, because if they do, they can then spread the infection to someone else.”
Fauci has been supportive of children wearing face masks for awhile. Back in May, he said children should take precautions to wear masks to protect themselves.
- “The children do (need to wear masks) when they’re out there playing with their friends, particularly in an indoor situation, they do,” Fauci told CNN back in May.
Hospitalization of children rise
USA Today reports that the hospitalization of children is on the rise in two separate states. In Mississippi, seven children are currently in the hospital because of the coronavirus — with two of those children on life support right now. Per CBS News, Mississippi is the state with the lowest vaccination rate against COVID-19.
Meanwhile, CoxHealth CEO Steve Edwards, who lives in Missouri, said his health system has seen an increase in young people getting sent to the hospital because of COVID-19.
- “We are seeing younger and sicker patients coming,” he said, according to USA Today.
