NBC is scheduled to turn "The Tonight Show" over to Conan O'Brien next year . . . and you've got to wonder if the Peacock- Powers- That- Be aren't starting to get more than a little nervous.

There was a late-night milestone last week that put the fear of Nielsen into their hearts at NBC. For the first time, "The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson" averaged more viewers than "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" when both shows were airing original episodes.

CBS's Ferguson averaged 1.88 million viewers to 1.77 million for O'Brien. Ferguson also won in households and adults 25-54; tied in women 18-49; and was just a tenth of a rating point behind in viewers 18-49.

It's only one week, but O'Brien doesn't exactly have momentum heading into 2009.
