Obi-Wan Kenobi has no idea who C-3PO is when they meet in “Star Wars: A New Hope” even though the prequel trilogy later told us that the two certainly knew each other. So what gives?
What’s going on: Anthony Daniels, who plays the C-3PO role in all of the nine Skywalker saga films, recently told HuffPost that he wasn’t sure why Obi-Wan Kenobi didn’t know C-3PO.
- He said it’s possible Obi-Wan knew too many droids.
- “I don’t know, I mean ... one droid looks like another, I guess,” Daniels told HuffPost. “You’d have to ask a major fan that question.”
Perspective: Per ComicBook.com, “A New Hope” was filmed well before the prequel trilogy so creator George Lucas hadn’t planned that far in advance.
However: According to ComicBook.com, the great thing about the modern ‘Star Wars’ era and the widening variety of content being offered to fans, is that there are now viable and enriching ways to retcon these sorts of mistakes. For instance: the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series coming to Disney Plus could fill in more than a few of the gaps in Obi-Wan’s story — including a story arc that could retcon the plothole by having Kenobi undergo some kind of mission that would later need to be wiped from his memory — specifically the memory of C-3PO.”
‘Rise of Skywalker’: Daniels told HuffPost that his character will have a bigger role in the forthcoming film, too.
“Finally, C-3PO comes back to be a part of the action as he was in ‘Episode IV,’ the original, and that feels really, really, really good and satisfying. To be in such a huge production as this, master-managed (and) masterminded by (J.J. Abrams) and the crew, it’s been like a prize at the end of the journey.”
