Robert Downey Jr. isn’t totally ruling out an opportunity to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
What happened: Downey Jr. told Extra that a return to the MCU is totally possible. But for now, he remains retired and out of the game.
- RDJ: “Yeah, anything could happen. ... As far as I’m concerned, I hung up my guns and I’m good to let it go. I also think Marvel is on this journey now and they’re trying a bunch of other stuff, and I’m excited for them to see how all that goes. It’s hard to project.”
Context: Downey Jr. did return as Tony Stark through archive footage in “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” which took place after his death. There are some rumors about him possibly popping up in “Black Widow,” which takes place before “Avengers: Infinity War,” according to ComicBook.com.
Flashback: In November 2019, actor Jeff Goldblum said that Downey would voice Iron Man for the upcoming Disney Plus series “What If ...?” — which will focus on fantastical “what if” scenarios for Marvel characters, according to CNET
- However, reports suggested Goldblum got it wrong that Downey Jr. would be involved with the show, CNET reports.
- There were also brief rumors that he would voice Iron Man for a possible Disney Plus show called “Ironheart,” which would focus on a character who continues the Iron Man legacy, according to the Deseret News.
