Taika Waititi has been approached to work on a new “Star Wars” movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
- Waititi previously directed “Jojo Rabbit” and “Thor: Ragnarok,” as well as an episode of “The Mandalorian.”
- Timing on this project remains unclear.
- Per The Hollywood Reporter:
“It is unclear where things stand in those talks. It is also unclear whether the project is separate from the one being developed by Kevin Feige, with whom he closely worked on Ragnarok, or a separate Star Wars project.”
Context: Waititi spent a lot of time working on “The Mandalorian.” He directed the first season finale and voiced the character IG-11.
- According to The Hollywood Reporter, “The Mandalorian” may be seen “as a training and testing ground for directors hoping for a larger role in Star Wars.”
- For example, Deborah Chow, who directed an episode on the show, will be the showrunner of the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series on Disney Plus, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
More projects: Disney and Star Wars have remained quiet about what’s to come in their universe.
- “Game of Thrones” directors David Benioff and D.B. Weiss dropped out their project, which was reportedly an entire trilogy.
- Rian Johnson is reportedly working on a trilogy, too.
- There were also rumors in late 2019 that “Star Wars” would unveil a new director or film concept in January 2020.
- Reports suggested the new big “Star Wars” film would take place during the High Republic era, which is hundreds of years before the Skywalker Saga.
