Jay-Z revealed in a recent speech at Columbia University that Kobe Bryant talked about his daughter Gianna in the final conversation between the hip-hop star and NBA legend, according to USA Today.

What happened?

  • Jay-Z said that Bryant talked about Gianna Bryant, 13, in their final conversation before Kobe and Gianna Bryant passed away in a tragic helicopter crash in January.
  • Jay-Z said (via USA Today): “Kobe was a guy that looked up to me, and we’ve hung out multiple times. He was last at my house on New Year’s, and he was just in the greatest space that I’ve seen him in. One of the last things he said to me was, ‘You’ve got to see Gianna play basketball.’ And that was one of the most hurtful things, because he was so proud.”
  • Jay-Z (via USA Today): “The look on his face was like — I looked and him and said, ‘Oh, she’s going to be the best female basketball player in the world.’ He was just so proud of what he said. So that’s really a tough one, and my wife and I took that — have taken that — really tough. That’s all I’ll say on that. Just a great human being and was in a great space in his life.”

What happens next?

  • Bryant and his daughter Gianna will be honored at the Staples Center on Feb. 24 through a public memorial service, which I wrote about for the Deseret News.
  • The Bryant family will be honored along with the seven other victims of the crash, including: Payton Chester, 13, Sarah Chester, 45, Alyssa Altobelli, 14, Keri Altobelli, 46, John Altobelli, 56, Christina Mauser, 38 and pilot Ara Zobayan, 50
