Multiple supermarkets across the country are opening early to accommodate elderly shoppers who want to stay free from the coronavirus.

What’s going on:

  • Grocery store chains have opened their doors early but only for older shoppers, giving them a chance to buy groceries and supplies without the fear of being infected by younger people, according to CNN.
  • Stop & Shop, a popular supermarket chain in New England, announced it would open from 6 to 7 a.m. “to serve customers who are ages 60 and over only.
  • Stop & Shop said: “We’re making the decision to offer this every day of the week to allow for community members in this age category to shop in a less crowded environment, which better enables social distancing. They’ll also be shopping prior to any other customers entering.”
  • The store said it could ask people to leave if they do not fit that age group.
  • The store said: “Although we will not be requesting ID for entry, we ask that you please respect the purpose of the early opening — and do the right thing for your neighbors.”

Internationally, this is happening, too.

  • Woolworths in Australia opened its stores an hour early, according to CNN.
  • Woolworths said on its website: “The move has been prompted by the unprecedented demand in supermarkets over the past week, which has seen many elderly and vulnerable people in the community missing out on vital items they may need when they shop.”
  • Coles supermarket chain in Australia will also have “community hours.”
