Florida has seen a rise in COVID-19 cases just weeks before Walt Disney World plans to reopen to the world.

What’s going on:

  • Florida reported an additional 2,016 COVID-19 cases on Saturday, which broke the streak of three days for record highs of coronavirus cases in the state, per The Tampa Bay Times.
  • Orange County, Florida, saw its highest single-day record of the coronavirus cases on Saturday, prompting health experts to wonder why there has been such a rise, according to The Orlando Sentinel.
  • Florida Gov. Rick DeSantis said the rise is tied to younger residents getting tested for the virus.
  • Dr. Cindy Prins, from the University of Florida, told the Orlando Sentinel she expects the rise to continue: “I expect to see this continue to climb a bit. What we really need to do is get the message out to people to wear a mask when you go out. I think that’s really, really critical.”

Why it matters:

  • The rise in cases comes as Florida looks to be a central spot of a number of events, including the reopening of Walt Disney World and the return of major league sports.
  • The rise in cases is “concerning news for both the NBA and Major League Soccer, both of whom have agreed to return to play in July at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and Walt Disney World Resort,” according to AM New York.
