New release dates for “Tenet” hint that the film will be released overseas before it hits theaters in the United States.
What’s going on?
- On Monday, Warner Bros. announced it would delay indefinitely the release of “Tenet” — the latest Christopher Nolan film, expected to be the first released during the pandemic.
- But Steven Zeitchik, an entertainment writer for The Washington Post, tweeted Tuesday that he has heard two potential dates for the release.
- He said: “The latest working dates within Warner Bros for ‘Tenet,’ I’m hearing, is Aug 26 overseas and Labor Day weekend in the U.S.”
- This fits the ongoing theory that “Tenet” will have an international release date before it hits the United States.
Other potential openings
- “Tenet” may not have a traditional release because of the coronavirus pandemic. Movie theaters in the United States remained closed because of COVID-19 spikes in some of the largest markets, raising questions about how a new movie would hit theaters, as I wrote about for Deseret.com.
- According to Deadline, Warner Bros. is targeting an unconventional rollout, which might include “a long theatrical tail.” This could see the film released at drive-in theaters as well as any smaller theaters that have reopened.
- Deadline said: “At this time the studio is rewriting the distribution playbook in real time, and will remain flexible in response to the erratic COVID-19 world we live in. Above all, they’re not turning their backs on exhibition.”
