What’s going on

  • The award show’s executive producers and host Jimmy Kimmel informed nominees on Wednesday that the 72nd annual ceremony will be held virtually amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • “We’re going to make you look fabulous,” producers said in a letter to the nominees, according to Page Six. “We’re exploring the cutting edge technology to allow to use good cameras and lighting and look forward to working with you to produce your unique ‘on screen’ moments.”

What will it look like?

  • The dress code for this year’s ceremony will be noticeably different.
  • “Our informal theme for the night is ‘come as you are, but make an effort,’” producers told nominees, according to US Weekly. “If you want to be in formal wear, we’d love that, but equally if you’re in the UK and it’s 3 a.m., perhaps you want to be in designer pajamas and record from your bed!”
  • Some designers are already questioning how to style Hollywood’s biggest names, according to People Magazine. Micaela Erlanger, who has dressed stars such as Meryl Streep and Lucy Hale, posted a poll on Instagram asking followers if they would rather see celebrities wear “Fancy Pajamas” or “Night Gowns.”
  • Overall, ABC has expressed its “intent to deliver a live show that is both celebratory and safe.” according to People Magazine.

When does the ceremony air?

  • Viewers can expect to watch the 72nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Kimmel, on Sept. 20.
