“The Mandalorian” showrunner Jon Favreau has some new ideas for the Disney Plus show, and that includes making it a lot like “Game of Thrones” — but not in the way you think.
Entertainment Weekly published its first look at “The Mandalorian” season 2, which included interviews with the cast and crew.
Favreau talked about the direction of the show moving forward, suggesting the show may take a direction similar to “Game of Thrones” by introducing a larger world.
- “The new season is about introducing a larger story in the world. The stories become less isolated, yet each episode has its own flavor, and hopefully we’re bringing a lot more scope to the show.”
- “As we introduce other characters, there are opportunities to follow different storylines. The world was really captivated by ‘Game of Thrones’ and how that evolved as the characters followed different storylines — that’s very appealing to me as an audience member.”
Dave Filoni — who has worked on “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and “Star Wars Rebels,” and now on “Mandalorian” — agreed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
- “Everything gets bigger, the stakes get higher, but also the personal story between the Child and the Mandalorian develops in a way I think people will enjoy.”
The second season of show — which is rumored to debut in October — is expected to bring in characters from previous “Star Wars” properties. For example, Ahsoka Tano — one of the main characters from “Clone Wars” — is rumored to be joining the show.
Favreau said before season 1 that he expected famous characters who appeared in the old “Star Wars” Expanded Universe — which was canceled once Disney bought Lucasfilm — could make an appearance.
- “I don’t want to talk about anything that might be fun for people to discover,” Favreau told Entertainment Weekly. “We do have conversations. Part of what’s fun to see if we could merge the worlds of the original trilogy, the prequels, the sequels, ‘The Clones Wars,’ and what’s been considered canon up to this point and what’s been considered part of Legends. I think this show offers an opportunity to bring in all those elements so no matter what your flavor of ‘Star Wars’ ice cream you like there will be something to enjoy. But you’re asking the right questions.”
