Director Zack Snyder’s version of “Justice League” — often referred to as the Snyder Cut — now has an official release date on HBO Max.

  • The film will debut March 18.

Snyder confirmed the release date Friday with a new tweet, which included a poster for the new film. The poster shows a film reel with “JL” etched on top of it.

What is the Snyder Cut?

The “Snyder Cut” is the original version of the film “Justice League,” which featured the team-up of Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman and other heroes in a “Avengers”-like film.

Synder was the original director of “Justice League” before he stepped away for a family tragedy. He had completed most of the film before he left the project. Joss Whedon jumped in to oversee production and reshoots. Whedon’s version of the film ended up in theaters, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

  • The Whedon version of the film released in theaters had 80% to 85% of the original cut, as I wrote about for the Deseret News. The Snyder version was rumored to be 3.5 hours long compared to the two-hour cut that was originally released. The Whedon version also reportedly nixed several storylines that were included in the Snyder cut.

For years, fans have speculated about a Snyder Cut, and have called for its release through the hashtag #ReleaseTheSnyderCut, as I wrote for the Deseret News. It wasn’t until May 2020 that HBO Max said it would release the film through its streaming service.
