Disney released the first trailer for the upcoming film “Cruella,” which stars Emma Stone and Emma Thompson, and social media immediately compared it to “Joker.”
What’s going on?
Disney released the first trailer for the Cruella de Vil spinoff film “Cruella.” The trailer suggests the film will focus on the early days of Cruella, as she looks to build a life for herself on the streets of London. We even see some Dalmatians in the trailer.
- Disney said in a news release that Cruella will link up with Baroness von Hellman (Emma Thompson), and the two will follow “a course of events and revelations that will cause Estella to embrace her wicked side and become the raucous, fashionable and revenge-bent Cruella.”
Social media reaction
People on social media started comparing the film’s trailer to “Joker” — the 2019 film starring Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker. The comparisons stemmed from Cruella’s laugh, her makeup and some of the expressions she made about society.
Just one more note
It’s unlikely “Cruella” will be like “Joker,” which had a lot of violence and dark themes that made for a mature film. “Joker” also tried to speak about massive mental health concerns, though it failed in doing so. “Joker” also came at a time of extreme violence in the United States.
