Why Sen. Ted Cruz is talking about Thanos

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz went viral Monday for comparing liberal Americans — and specifically those in Hollywood — to the Marvel villain Thanos. And yes, there are a lot of holes in his comparison.

What happened?

A viral video clip of Cruz shows the Texas senator speaking about liberal leaders and how they treat workers across America. The conversation then turns to how liberals talk about the environment through Hollywood.

• “And actually what is interesting in ‘Endgame’ is curious. Have you noticed in how many movies how often rabid environmentalists are the bad guys? Whether it’s Thanos or go to ‘Watchmen.’ Where the view of the left is people are a disease. They buy into the Malthusian line that there are too many people in the world, that people are bad and everything would be better if we had fewer people. I mean, Thanos wanted to eliminate 50% of the life forms of the universe with one finger snapping.”

What really happened

Thanos snapped his fingers in “Avengers: Infinity War” to cut the universe’s population in half in order to keep resources plentiful for the remaining people. But in “Avengers: Endgame,” Thanos changes his mind and wants to obliterate the entire population of the world in order to create a more balanced universe.

What is Cruz saying?

It’s hard to understand what Cruz is saying here. He seems to suggest liberal environmentalists support Thanos’ cause? But the rest of the movie features The Avengers trying to defeat Thanos.

Regardless, it led to some confusion on Twitter.
