The 2025 Oscar nominees were announced on Thursday morning and “Emilia Pérez” leads the pack with 13 nominations.
“Wicked” and “The Brutalist” follow close behind with 10 nominations each.
Because the Oscars only showcase a small amount of film achievement, there are bound to be snubs — and performances that are bypassed. And where there are snubs, there are also surprises.
Here are the biggest snubs and surprises from this year’s nominees.
They forgot this
Angelina Jolie
According to Variety, her performance as opera singer Maria Callas in “Maria” earned her some of the best reviews in her whole career at the Venice Film Festival.
But it wasn’t enough to get her a nomination from the Academy.
“Maria” is rated R for mild profanity and depictions of alcohol and drug use.

Denzel Washington
After a lot of buzz about his performance in “Gladiator II,” Washington was still passed by despite being an “Academy Awards favorite,” according to Today.
“Gladiator II” is rated R for violence and gore.
Selena Gomez
While the film “Emilia Pérez” got a lot of love from the Academy, Vogue reported that Gomez was not among the stars nominated for best supporting actress despite her “all-singing, all-dancing supporting turn” getting a Golden Globe and BAFTA.
“Emilia Pérez” is rated R for language, nudity and violence.
Didn’t see that coming
Sabastian Stan
Stan found a spot among those nominated for best actor. This came as a surprise because his role as a young Donald Trump in “The Apprentice” lead to be controversial, according to Vogue.
However, it seems the Academy was taken by his performance, as well as his co-star, Jeremy Strong, who is a nominee for best supporting actor.
“The Apprentice” is rated R for nudity, sexuality, violence and language.

Fernanda Torres
Torres is building off of her Golden Globe win with her nomination for best actress for “I’m Still Here.”
Torres has seemed to beat out household names like Kidman and Jolie and might continue to do so, according to Today.
Monica Barbaro
According to Vogue, Barbaro was somewhat of an outlier when it came to possible candidates for best supporting actress.
She was overlooked by the other awards shows, but her performance in “A Complete Unknown” seemed to turn the heads of the Academy.
“A Complete Unknown” is rated R for profanity.
‘The Substance’
A horror film making it to the Oscars seemed quite unlikely until the official nominees were announced, according to Variety.
However, “The Substance” was nominated for not just one Oscar but five, including best picture, best actress and best director for Coralie Fargeat.
“The Substance” is rated R for profanity, gore and nudity.
