SALT LAKE CITY — Beaver stretched its dominance of 2A golf to a new standard on Thursday afternoon en route to a third straight state championship.

The Beavers obliterated the field at Rose Park Golf Course, finishing with a 586 two-day total, 115 strokes better than second-place Rowland Hall.

A year ago, Beaver shot a 616 to win by 92 strokes, but it shattered both of those numbers this week.

“Very proud, they played fantastic,” said Beaver coach Jason Pollard. “We didn’t let up — these guys pushed to the very end. They worked hard the last two weeks of practice, and their dedication proved to be the difference in their success.”

Beaver finished with the top four individuals, led by 2A medalist Braden Roberts who finished with a 140. The junior followed up his 72 on Wednesday with a 4-under 68 on Thursday.

“Braden has been consistent all year. I think he’s finally got his power this last year and he’s really fine-tuned his clubs and he knows his distances. You get him on a course where you have short par 4s and he just kind of eats them up,” Pollard said.

Jaxon Hutchings finished second for the Beavers with a 145, followed by Chipper Willden in third with a 150 and Klayson Matheson with a 151. Willden is the only Beaver senior who competed at state, which means the dominance should extend to next year as well.

Rowland Hall’s Giorgio Gianoulis rounded at the top five with a two-day 153.

Even though the state title was a foregone conclusion for Beaver, Pollard said his players never took anything for granted after dedicating the season to Matheson’s mother, Amy, who passed away from cancer in March.

“At the first of the season, we dedicated the season to her, we put her name on our shirts and hats and we’re all wearing the breast cancer symbol, and I think that was one of the driving forces for the victory is we all came together as a team to fight for one common goal,” Pollard said.
