The 2A state tournament gets underway again this Thursday with the quarterfinals at the Sevier Valley Center.

The top four seeds are all still in the hunt for the state title as No. 1 North Summit, No. 2 Millard, No. 3 Wasatch Academy and No. 4 Kanab all won easily in the second round.

The first quarterfinal is slated for 4:10 p.m. on Thursday between Duchesne and Kanab.

With defending state champion Beaver losing in the second round, a new state champion will be crowned in Saturday’s state championship.

No. 1 North Summit Braves (22-1)

2019-2020 Schedule

Head coach: Jerre Holmes (fifth year)

Region: Finished first in Region 16 with a 10-0 record

Quarterfinals: vs. Enterprise, 5:50 p.m. (At Sevier Valley Center)

How advanced to quarterfinals:

  • First round: Bye
  • Second round: North Summit 81, American Heritage 41

Best victory: 61-51 win vs. Judge Memorial on Nov. 26

Top contributors:

  • #12 Kennady McQueen, Sr., G (20.9 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 5.1 apg, 4.6 spg)
  • #30 Gracie Watterson, Sr., F (10.8 ppg, 8.8 rpg, 1.6 apg, 1.0 spg)
  • #22 Hadley Richins, Jr., G (8.9 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 4.7 apg, 3.9 spg)

  • #2 Marci Richins, So., F (6.3 ppg, 7.1 rpg, 2.2 spg)

Scoring offense: 64.3 ppg (1st in 2A)

Scoring defense: 35.9 ppg (6th in 2A)

Last state championship: 1986 (1A)

2019 postseason: Lost to Kanab 58-49 in semifinals

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Win over Wasatch Academy in championship

Edward’s evaluation: North Summit rolls into the 2A quarterfinals with a sparkling 22 victories and very high expectations. If that sounds familiar, it’s because that’s the exact scenario it faced last year heading into the quarterfinals — where it eventually lost in the semifinals to Kanab. This year just feels different. Not only are the Braves a better team, but the southern region just hasn’t been as strong this season. Back in December, North Summit beat Millard by 29 points, and the Eagles are the No. 2 seed in the playoffs. It would be a huge shock if North Summit didn’t win the title this year.

No. 2 Millard Eagles (17-5)

2019-2020 Schedule

Head coach: Melanie Bassett (third year)

Region: Finished first in Region 18 with a 7-1 record

Quarterfinals: vs. North Sevier, 7:30 p.m. (At Sevier Valley Center)

How advanced to quarterfinals:

  • First round: Bye
  • Second round: Millard 60, Gunnison Valley 43

Best victory: 47-41 win at Kanab on Jan. 21

Top contributors:

  • #11 Kobree Penney, Sr., G/F (14.0 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 2.2 apg, 3.4 spg)
  • #10 Rylee Miller, Sr., G/F (11.8 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 1.8 apg, 2.5 spg)
  • #55 Eliza Swallow, Jr., F (9.2 ppg, 4.3 rpg)
  • #23 Camilla Robison, Sr., G/F (3.0 ppg, 1.8 rpg, 1.3 apg)
  • #21 Paige Cummings, So., G (3.0 ppg, 1.4 rpg)

Scoring offense: 50.6 ppg (4th in 2A)

Scoring defense: 42.3 ppg (15th in 2A)

Last state championship: 2018 (2A)

2019 postseason: Lost to North Summit 64-53 in quarterfinals

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Wasatch Academy in semifinals

Edward’s evaluation: Assuming Millard beats North Sevier in the quarterfinals — a team it already beat by 15 points back on Jan. 3 — things get much more difficult. Next up would likely be a semifinal game against Wasatch Academy, a team it lost to twice back in early December. The Eagles didn’t play well offensively in either of those games, but their offense has gotten a lot better throughout the season which perhaps may translate to better success.

No. 3 Wasatch Academy Tigers (18-3)

2019-2020 Schedule

Head coach: Travis Madsen (first year)

Region: Finished first in Region 15 with a 12-0 record

Quarterfinals: vs. Draper APA, 9:10 p.m. (At Sevier Valley Center)

How advanced to quarterfinals:

  • First round: Bye
  • Second round: Wasatch Academy 55, Parowan 37

Best victory: 49-43 win at Millard on Dec. 3

Top contributors:

  • #34 Nataly Dunka, Jr., G/F (17.4 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 3.0 apg, 1.7 spg)
  • #13 Debora Reis, Jr., F/C (15.5 ppg, 13.0 rpg, 2.4 apg, 2.3 spg)
  • #24 Olivia Jessee, Jr., G/F (8.9 ppg, 6.4 rpg, 2.2 apg, 1.8 spg)
  • #2 Duda Raimundo, Sr., G (8.6 ppg, 1.9 rpg, 5.6 apg, 2.1 spg)
  • #11 Mattea Wade, Jr., G/F (1.7 ppg, 1.3 rpg)

Scoring offense: 56.7 ppg (3rd in 2A)

Scoring defense: 31.2 ppg (3rd in 2A)

Last state championship: None

2019 postseason: Lost to Kanab 64-44 in quarterfinals

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Wasatch Academy in championship

Edward’s evaluation: A year ago Wasatch Academy just didn’t have the depth to try and keep up with the upper-echelon teams in 2A, but the addition of Debora Reis this year has changed that. Most of the Tigers games this year were blowouts as they played in a weak region, but in games against tougher foes they held their own. Wins over Millard twice and Beaver, and then close losses to Springville and Kanab show that they’re ready to compete. It might be enough to get them to the semifinals, but it would take a big upset to beat North Summit.

No. 4 Kanab Cowboys (14-7)

2019-2020 Schedule

Head coach: Klint Glover (first year)

Region: Finished third in Region 18 with a 4-4 record

Quarterfinals: vs. Duchesne, 4:10 p.m. (At Sevier Valley Center)

How advanced to quarterfinals:

  • First round: Bye
  • Second round: Kanab 52, Beaver 42

Best victory: 43-41 win vs. Wasatch Academy on Jan. 18

Top contributors:

  • #22 Brinley Cornell, Sr. (14.1 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 2.1 apg, 2.4 spg)
  • #11 Grayce Glover, So. (13.4 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 3.5 apg, 2.5 spg)
  • #10 Rylee Anderson, Jr. (7.7 ppg, 6.1 rpg, 1.7 spg)
  • #2 Baylee Ramsay, Sr. (4.5 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 2.4 apg, 1.7 spg)
  • #33 Macie Stewart, Sr. (4.0 ppg, 4.4 rpg)

Scoring offense: 46.7 ppg (6th in 2A)

Scoring defense: 35.8 ppg (5th in 2A)

Last state championship: 1992 (2A)

2019 postseason: Lost to Beaver 54-52 in championship

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to North Summit in semifinals

Edward’s evaluation: With just one returning key contributor from last year’s runner-up team — not to mention a new coach — it has been an unpredictable season from Kanab this year. Strangely, it’s become even more unpredictable in region play. Kanab beat Enterprise by 32 points in their first meeting, but then lost by two in the second. It beat Beaver by 16 in the first meeting but then lost by one in the second. It will need much more consistent performances at the Sevier Valley Center, especially if it advances to the semis to face top seed North Summit.

No. 8 Enterprise Wolves (15-10)

2019-2020 Schedule

Head coach: Lance Jones (seventh year)

Region: Finished second in Region 18 with a 5-3 record

Quarterfinals: vs. North Summit, 5:50 p.m. (At Sevier Valley Center)

How advanced to quarterfinals:

  • First round: Enterprise 78, Utah Military CW 15
  • Second round: Enterprise 48, Altamont 23

Best victory: 56-51 win vs. Millard on Jan. 30

Top contributors:

  • #3 Sofie Shurtliff, Jr., F (10.6 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 1.2 apg, 1.5 spg)
  • #10 Averie Staheli, Sr., G (8.8 ppg, 3.8 rpg, 1.3 apg, 1.4 spg)
  • #1 Noah Moyle, So., F (6.7 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 1.0 apg)
  • #12 Allie Hunt, Jr., G (5.2 ppg, 1.5 rpg)
  • #4 Rylee Reber, So., G (3.1 ppg, 2.8 rpg, 2.5 apg, 1.5 spg)

Scoring offense: 45.8 ppg (7th in 2A)

Scoring defense: 52.9 ppg (17th in 2A)

Last state championship: 2014 (2A)

2019 postseason: Lost to Beaver 62-44 in semifinals

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to North Summit in quarterfinals

Edward’s evaluation: Enterprise is the clear underdog in the quarterfinals against North Summit, and would need to play a near perfect game to pull off the upset. There’s reason for optimism though. In the latter half of region play the Wolves beat both Kanab and Millard and have proven they can score points in bunches at times. To keep up with North Summit it will need to be shooting the ball at a very high percentage to try and keep up.

No. 10 North Sevier Wolves (13-10)

2019-2020 Schedule

Head coach: Lexa Larsen (28th year)

Region: Finished second in Region 16 with a 7-3 record

Quarterfinals: vs. Millard, 7:30 p.m. (At Sevier Valley Center)

How advanced to quarterfinals:

  • First round: North Sevier 69, APA West Valley 11
  • Second round: North Sevier 46, Rowland Hall 32

Best victory: 45-42 win at Beaver on Dec. 10

Top contributors:

  • #14 Kamree Brunson, Sr., G (10.0 ppg)
  • #43 Brinley Mason, Sr., C (9.2 ppg)
  • #24 Macady Goble, Sr., G (8.3 ppg)
  • #20 Brook Roper, Sr., G (7.6 ppg)
  • #23 Allie Cowley, Jr., F (2.4 ppg)

Scoring offense: 42.0 ppg (11th in 2A)

Scoring defense: 39.0 ppg (11th in 2A)

Last state championship: 2017 (2A)

2019 postseason: Lost to Wasatch Academy 42-41 in first round

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Millard in quarterfinals

Edward’s evaluation: The Wolves may not have the same glossy resume as the higher-seeded 2A teams, but what they do have is momentum. Winners of seven straight games, they head into the quarterfinals playing their best basketball of the season. North Sevier hasn’t played a team as good as Millard during that stretch though. It already lost by 15 points to Millard back on Jan. 3, and to be more competitive in the rematch it needs to be much more efficient offensively than just its 42.0 ppg average.

No. 11 Draper APA Eagles (16-5)

2019-2020 Schedule

Head coach: Dan Baldwin (first year)

Region: Finished second in Region 15 with a 10-2 record

Quarterfinals: vs. Wasatch Academy, 9:10 p.m. (At Sevier Valley Center)

How advanced to quarterfinals:

  • First round: Draper APA 61, Rockwell 27
  • Second round: Draper 48, Waterford 36

Best victory: 43-28 win vs. Gunnison Valley on Dec. 5

Top contributors:

  • #4 Riley Bluth, So. (15.1 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 1.3 apg, 2.6 spg)
  • #3 Bailey Berquist, So. (8.7 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 4.6 apg, 4.1 spg)
  • #11 Dariona Foster, Jr. (6.4 ppg, 13.2 rpg, 2.1 spg)
  • #20 Jossalyne Foster, Sr. (6.4 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.3 spg)
  • #32 Kassie Tui, So. (4.6 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 1.1 apg)

Scoring offense: 50.3 ppg (5th in 2A)

Scoring defense: 33.9 ppg (4th in 2A)

Last state championship: None

2019 postseason: Lost to Altamont 53-36 in first round

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Wasatch Academy in quarterfinals

Edward’s evaluation: Draper APA is a surprise quarterfinalist after upsetting Waterford in the second round, but it’s hard to image another upset in the quarterfinals against Wasatch Academy. It already lost to the Tigers twice this year — by 31 and 38 points, respectively. Regardless of what happens the rest of the way, simply reaching the quarterfinals is a great step for the young program to build on.

No. 12 Duchesne Eagles (12-11)

2019-2020 Schedule

Head coach: Blair Madsen (second year)

Region: Finished fourth in Region 16 with a 5-5 record

Quarterfinals: vs. Kanab, 4:10 p.m. (At Sevier Valley Center)

How advanced to quarterfinals:

  • First round: Duchesne 52, Merit Academy 15
  • Second round: Duchesne 58, Layton Christian 35

Best victory: 38-30 win vs. Draper APA on Dec. 3

Top contributors:

  • #10 Oakley Butler, Jr., G (7.0 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 2.0 spg)
  • #25 Kelsey Grant, Fr., G (7.0 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 1.2 spg)
  • #12 Taylee Giles, Sr., F (6.7 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 1.4 spg)
  • #24 Baylee Clayburn, So., C (4.7 ppg, 3.7 rpg, 1.2 spg)
  • #15 Brook Spencer, Jr., C (3.2 ppg, 3.4 rpg)

Scoring offense: 36.5 ppg (19th in 2A)

Scoring defense: 37.0 ppg (9th in 2A)

Last state championship: None

2019 postseason: Lost to Enterprise 53-34 in quarterfinals

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Kanab in quarterfinals

Edward’s evaluation: Duchesne played one of its best games of the season to upset higher-seeded Layton Christian in the second round. The 58 points scored in that win was its highest of the season, and 22 points more than its season average. It will take another Herculean-type effort to pull off another upset of Kanab in the quarterfinals.
