Just about two months ago the Internet was abuzz with speculation that Mitt Romney might ask CIA Director David Petraeus to be his running mate.
The Drudge Report said an anonymous source overheard President Obama talking about the possibility. The President wasnt joking, the source said.
This Christian Post story quoted Petraeus as saying he had no interest in running for political office, but then noted the coy and educated general used the exact same words in his denial as had Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, who subsequently did run for office anyway.
Most reports said the selection of Petraeus would be a game-changer. This USnews.com story said it would give Romney foreign-policy expertise on the ticket, making up for Romneys own lack of it.
The story also quoted a GOP official who said he doubted Petraeus would betray his own commanding officer by running against him.
In light of the seemingly ever-unfolding events that led to Petraeus abrupt resignation late last week, its interesting to contemplate what might have happened if Petraeus had left to run with Romney.
Im guessing we might have learned about his affair with Paula Broadwell, and all the other sordid details, a lot sooner than we did.
