I see the Tax Reform Committee expressing the giddy news of a family of four receiving $300 a year with the new plan. I have a few questions I would like to ask.

Have any of the committee had to decide whether to buy food for their children or pay rent? I doubt it. Have any of the committee had to decide whether to buy gas to get to work or to buy food for their children? I doubt that. Have any of the committee fed their children noodles for three months and only noodles because bills were due and the money made just didn’t stretch far enough? I doubt it. Will the $300 buy the family food for a year? I very much doubt it. Have any of the committee made $20 a month too much to gain food stamps? Probably not.

The taxation of food is despicable. Only those who barely make enough to live or those older citizens who are on a fixed income will be the ones who suffer. Everyone else will cheer saving and getting an extra $300 a year. How can a responsible committee decide that this is fair and right? I’ll tell you. They have never had to make choices between food or lodging, food or gas or food and other necessities. I am grateful the committee has never had to make these choices because it’s the hardest thing a parent or an older citizen makes every day.

One out of seven children are hungry every day. How many more will be hungry because of the tax on food? What a sad decision the committee has made.
