Sen. Mike Lee worries that men are increasingly dropping out of the workforce, leading to less stable families and communities. While the economy is strong, economic gains are mostly going to the top 1% as good paying jobs that once supported a family are lost to automation, offshoring and outsourcing. Some get depressed, drop out and even get hooked on opioids, exacerbating the problem. Something must be done to lift wages.
Right now Congress is looking at tax policy so I ask the Utah delegation to expand the earned income tax credit and the child tax credit — measures with a long history of bipartisan support. Local businesses will also benefit as greater spending power spurs sales and profits. Expand the EITC and CTC. It’s good for workers, good for business, and it’s good for families.
