With the recent announcement that Brigham Young University will continue online instructions at least to the summer, and the pandemic of COVID-19 having no definitive end in sight, how will the student housing market respond?

From a supply and demand point of view, the lack of demand for housing over the spring and summer will have the same effect as we have seen in gas process over the last month. Students who stay in Provo, by choice or otherwise, will enjoy this situation.

Getting a break from the “Hunger Games” frenzy of finding housing will be a much awaited rest, but with the added pressure of higher unemployment rates projected nationwide, the student housing market could never return to normality. Perhaps student housing should reconsider their priorities, and, for the students’ sakes, their rates.
