A recent letter to the editor said, “Apparently our manly American ancestors were more interested in protecting the health and lives of their wives and children than their bank accounts,” referring to a yellow fever outbreak in 1886 (“Letter: Protecting public safety and health is the very purpose of government,” June 6). I don’t believe anyone desires to sicken their neighbor. Government curbing of citizen activity is apparently advocated mainly by people who have a steady income. The people hurt most are the ones who have no bank accounts and are prevented from working.
