Flames spread above Battle Creek Canyon in Pleasant Grove on late Saturday, Sept. 12, 2020.

I disagree with the idea that finding blame with the current fires isn’t a good idea (“In our opinion: The West is burning — and right now, who’s at fault doesn’t matter,” Sept. 15). As someone who spent 15 years in California, I saw firsthand how it went from a well-oiled machine to its present shabby existence today.

Liberal leaders have played a big part in this transformation by allowing the old growth to remain and provide fuel for the fires, which now create an enormous carbon footprint that other western states must suffer from. Groups like the Sierra Club, as well as political leaders, should be held accountable for this.

Perhaps Utah should explore the idea of a lawsuit against California for its negligence in allowing its forests to deteriorate.
