One thing that I would like to address is the topic of sexism and how it affects people beyond what people commonly think of. Typically when people hear about sexism they think about the gender wage gap, which is about 19%, but people don’t know the consequences that sexism can have on mental health.
There have been have been several studies done to support this claim, including one that states, “women who reported sex discrimination were found to be three times as likely to see a decline in their mental health over the next four years including experiencing clinical depression” (Banyan Mental Health). The study later goes on to state that because of the decline in their mental health, they turn to drugs and alcohol which inevitably make the mental problems worse.
The effects of sexism aren’t talked about often enough and I feel like it’s time to change that.
