My hero is a man who will be 75 on the 28th of this month. He suffered a severe stroke in Jan of 2016. He had to relearn how to do everything over again, and walked out of rehab in 28 days — which tells you something about what kind of man he is. He has worked hard every day from when he was a young kid on the farm, has served for his country and takes pride in everything he does. Today he still suffers from the effects of the stroke with very limited use of his left arm (his left hand has no mobility at all and he is left handed) has not hindered his work ethic at all. He still works to this day, and although it is frustrating at times, he still tries to make the best of it. This man I am so proud and lucky my dad, teacher and mentor in life. I love you daddy!

My hero is my mom. She is a single mom and has been for about 19 years. She did everything she could to provide for us, she drove a snow plow and a school bus for 4 years before getting a job at a police department. When I went through my divorce myself, we had nothing, she made sure me and my kids had a place to live, she fixed up our whole home, tiled, sheetrocked, painted and built us a home from the inside out. She supported me emotionally, she’s my rock! She deserves the world. I hope I can be half the woman she is, that my kids will look up to me as much as I do her!

Grandparents Day — celebrated the first Sunday after Labor Day — has always gotten the short end of the stick. The holiday has been around since 1978, but just hasn’t taken off like Father’s or Mother’s Day. When’s the last time you got a present? Or even a card? Fortunately, it doesn’t have to be this way. Go Outdoors

A sunny September day is a great time to take your wildlings out to see some wildlife. Go to Sugarhouse Park and you can even feed some wildlife. (Remember: Corn, oats and seeds are good for ducks; no bread please!).

If you’re ready for a more active pastime, start the day with one of these kid-friendly hikes. Download an app of Utah flora and fauna to trick your grandkids into thinking you’re an outdoor oracle. If wildlife isn’t your forte, why not visit Wheeler Historic Farm and point out the more familiar barnyard animals while getting a taste of yesteryear Utah agriculture?

Or go all in on flora at Red Butte Garden, a living plant museum curated in fresh air and sunshine ($10 for seniors, $7 per kid).

Grab a Treat

The last days of summer can still be hot, so get to the ice cream parlors you took your grandchildren’s parents to. Happy Valley has the Creamery on Ninth East, Salt Lake’s Leatherby’s Family Creamery serves floats and sundaes starting at just $5 and Bountiful’s Nielsen’s Frozen Custard has cones for $2 and concretes starting at $4.

If they’re not really screaming for ice cream — first of all, what’s wrong with them? Oh, lactose intolerant? Oh okay… uhh, sorry — drive up the road to So Cupcake for a $3 baked treat or a mini at half price.

Adventure September is a great time to get wet with a tubing trip down the Provo River ($12 per person at High Country Adventure). Or take part in the Get into the River Festival and celebrate the Jordan River in Salt Lake County. The festival runs the entire month of September and most events are free.

If you’re not as young as you used to be and that sounds a little athletic, watch someone else sweat. BYU and Utah football games can be pricey, all-day affairs, but you might try other sports and/or smaller schools: Westminster College’s soccer, volleyball, and basketball tickets sell for $5.

Museums

Learn ’em a thing or two at one of Utah’s many PBSque museums. Watch them gape at gems the size of their head and dinosaur bones at the rock-red Natural History Museum of Utah ($13 for seniors, $10 for kids).

Or teach them how their grandparents’ grandparents lived at This Is the Place Heritage Park ($5 for seniors and $4 for kids on Sundays). If you’re downtown, another museum with discounted Sunday prices is the Discovery Gateway Children’s Museum ($6 Sundays).

Shopping

If you want to take the grandkids back-to-school shopping, try Kid to Kid. The clothing might be pre-loved, but it’s hand-picked by staff to appeal to even finicky fashionistas & fashionistos (fashionisters?).

Get Ready for Fall

Don’t let those kiddos forget that Grandparents Day comes once a year but lives in hearts all year long. As the leaves begin to change, take them on scenic drives to absorb bursts of orange, red and gold.

Visit the Wasatch Front Farmer’s Market Saturday mornings at Gardner Village. The last weekend of the month is Kids Market for Salt Lake’s young entrepreneurs.

There’s also Peach Days in Brigham City for a car and motorcycle show, two parades, hundreds of vendors and, of course, locally harvested peaches.

Whatever you do, don’t let another Grandparents Day slide by. Your grandkids aren’t getting any younger, and there’s no such thing as Great-Grandparents Day. (Yet!)

The bigger your kids get, the more space they need. The more space they need, the smaller your house feels. The smaller your house feels, the longer and hotter summer seems to get.

Once a kid starts school, summer vacation becomes sacrosanct. They’re counting on you to drum up some fun so they have great stories to tell their friends on the first day of school. They want thrills. They want adventure. They want to squirt someone with a hose.

But, you may be wondering, where is the best place to squirt people with a hose?

We polled Utah parents about the top spots for restive rugrats and came up with this handy list. Get ’em up, keep ’em busy and wear ’em out so they fall asleep before the sun even sets.

Swimming

Your 5–8-year-olds have outgrown the kiddie pool. They’re ready for slides, waves, cannonballs and running on the wet edge of the pool no matter how many times you and the lifeguards shout at them.

• Lindon Aquatics Center. Lap pool, lazy river, pirate-themed kiddie pool and FlowRider. 4–17 — $4.50 / 18+ — $5.50.
• Layton Surf ’n Swim. Outdoor pool with an inflatable bubble enclosure when the weather turns. Your 5+-year-olds are finally big enough to enjoy the waves they turn on every 15 minutes. 4+ — $4.50.
• Orem SCERA Pool. Splash pad, deep & shallow pools, big & little slides, lots of chairs and tables. 0 FREE / 1–3 $1.50 / 4–13 $5 / 14+ $6.
• Cottonwood Heights Recreation Center. Indoor & outdoor pools, splash zone, slides and high dives. 0–17 $4.50 / 18+ $5.50.
• St. George City Pool. “That’s too big to be called a ‘waterslide’… [*monster-truck voice:*] That’s a HYDROTUBE!” 0–13 $2 / 14+ $3 (Hydrotube is an extra $2.50).

Hiking

Let’s be honest: Most of us can’t afford to do a paid activity every day. Plus, if you take your kid swimming too often they’ll get spoiled and think life owes them something. Engage in some good old-fashioned hardship and take them hiking! Utah’s lousy with beautiful hiking trails, and while you may need to pack some bribes and/or threats, we’d be willing to bet they’ll remember the time they hiked Timp longer than they remember this summer’s 20th trip to the pool.

• Donut Falls (Big Cottonwood Canyon). Fun, forested hike to a waterfall pouring through a hole into a cavern. 3.5 miles round trip.
• Battle Creek Falls (Pleasant Grove). Hike along a stream to a waterfall running over an impressive rock wall. You can hike right up to the falls, so chuck your kids in if they complain about being hot. 1.2 miles RT.
• Timp Falls (Provo). A beautiful alternative to the neighboring Stewart Falls trail, which can get crowded. The falls are biggest during spring runoff. 1 mile RT to lower falls; 2.5 miles RT to upper falls.
• Silver Reef Trail (Leeds). Dino tracks! Great camping, swimming holes and other hiking trails in Red Cliffs Recreation Area. 0.5–? miles depending on what you add on.
• Canyon Overlook Trail (Zion). Beautiful views of the park, just challenging enough for your kids to feel proud of themselves. 1 mile RT.

Splash pad

Back in our day — a simpler time, to be sure — you just turned on the sprinklers in the front yard. But, we’ve got to admit, the fountains and buckets and water cannons look pretty fun, and our squealing kids would corroborate that idea. Though they didn’t exist 20 years ago, splash pads have popped up in about every city with a stop light. (Find a list of them here.) They’re in city parks, at swimming pools, and at the mall. Some are paid and most are free. Bring an umbrella and a book and watch your kids shiver happily in 95˚ heat.

Lagoon

A Utah institution. Five-to-eight years old is the perfect age to enjoy Lagoon: The kiddie rides are still fun, they’re getting tall enough to ride the big rides (major cutoffs are 36", 46" and 50"), they can go all day on a single bag of cotton candy and they’re not in that eye-rolling tween phase where they’re too cool to ride Colossus with their dad. It’s not cheap, but you can bounce back within 10 days for $17. Other theme parks for a special occasion:

• Boondocks (Kaysville, Draper). Go karts, bowling, kiddie cove, XD theater, batting cages, etc.
• Classic Fun Center (Sandy, Orem, Layton, Riverdale). Skating, trampolines, jungle gym, laser tag, arcades, etc.
• Jump Around Utah (Salt Lake City). Your kids will feel like manic monarchs in this tiny inflatable kingdom.

Camping

Another summer essential, and it’s one that kids take to more easily than some of us adults. However you want to do it (backpacking, car camping, in an RV…) and wherever you want to do it (in the mountains, in red rock country, by a lake, in a campground…) — there’s something magical about sleeping on a hard bed outside. Plus it’s a lot easier to get them to put their video games down when there’s nowhere to plug them in.

• Goblin Valley State Park. All the facilities you need for comfy camping next to six square miles of natural jungle gym.
• Bear Lake State Park. August is raspberry season at the Caribbean of the Rockies.
• Tony Grove Lake. A secluded little spot in the beautiful northern forest.
• Granite Flats. A well-maintained campground in northern Utah County.
• Jordanelle State Park. The boating’s so good you won’t be alone, but that just means more people will get to admire your wakeboarding moves.

Salt Lake Bees Baseball

Even if they don’t appreciate the subtlety of a well-executed sacrifice bunt, your kids will love the hot dogs, nachos, train rides and produce races. (Never bet on the banana.) Also, by 5 years old they’re probably done being terrified of Bumble.

Swimming

When it comes to swimming with toddlers, a parent has two choices: 1. Have a crazy good time, or 2. Go crazy. Most adults prefer the first. The key to a smooth summer swim season with toddlers is finding a beach-entry or zero-entry pool, where the deck gradually slopes into the water, and joining in the fun with your kiddos. Choose pools that have plenty of shallow areas, aren’t overcrowded and where kids can explore areas built just for them.

These favorite Utah pools all feature beach-entry shallow areas, play structures and are FREE for toddlers under 3!

• North Shore Aquatics Center (N. Ogden). Outdoor pool, gorgeous mountain views and grass galore. 4 & up — $4.
• South Davis Recreation Center (Bountiful). Indoor & outdoor pools and a pirate ship play structure. Youth $3.50 / adults $5.

Picnicking

We’ll let you in on a little secret: Utah has AMAZING picnic spots! Break up with the view out your kitchen window and take in some new scenery over PB&J al fresco. Remember to bring plenty of finger foods for the kids and then relax while they throw their food on the ground rather than smearing jam on your walls.

• Sugar House Park. Picnic here all summer and never lunch in the same spot. Enjoy the grass hills, large pond, multiple play areas and bike paths. Explore Hidden Hollow Nature Walk west of the park via The Draw, an underground tunnel connecting the east and west sides of 1300 E.
• Liberty Park. Lunch under huge shade trees, explore multiple playgrounds and enjoy the sounds from Tracy Aviary. A SLC favorite, the Seven Canyons Fountain is CLOSED this summer for repairs, but check out the splash pad at the west playground or the affordable Liberty Park Pool (2 & under FREE / youth $1.50 / adult $2).
• International Peace Gardens. Enjoy monuments representing 28 countries in these beautiful gardens located at the Jordan River Parkway.
• Paul Ream Wilderness Park in Provo. A gazebo, duck pond, playground and walking trails near the Provo River Parkway Trail make this a local favorite for a midday reprieve.

Hiking

Get those kids outside and exploring (and wear them out well before nap time). We’ve learned from our readers that toddlers don’t actually hike; they toddle, run, trip, climb and ride in packs or on shoulders. While there are many family-friendly river and waterfall hikes in Utah, suggested below are options where mom and dad don’t have to worry about kids falling into raging rivers or smashing their cute faces on rock obstacles.

• Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge (Brigham City). Park at the Visitor’s Center and pick up a discovery backpack filled with tools to help even the smallest of the bunch enjoy the unique ecosystem. Boardwalks and trails wind through the cattails, and birds abound.
• Cascade Springs (Midway). Make it a morning and drive into the refreshing mountains above Midway. Walking loops with maps keep kids engaged as they explore the springs on designated walking paths. (No picnicking inside the springs so plan to eat at the car.)
• Silver Lake (Brighton). The quintessential Utah family hike/walk. Enjoy the clean mountain air as you meander on the boardwalk and trail around the lake.
• Bell Canyon Reservoir (Sandy). Keep this one short and hike to the reservoir 0.25 miles up for beautiful views of the Salt Lake Valley.

Museuming/Zooing/Aquariuming

You know how every time a toddler finds a pill bug they treat it like they discovered the Loch Ness Monster? Make it easy for them to have lots of eureka moments by visiting some Utah’s family favorites. The free ones are always nice since there’s no perceived obligation to stay past toddler’s tolerance window, but quality and good timing make spending some extra cash worth it!

• Hill Aerospace Museum. Explore aircraft, missiles and military vehicles inside and out at this FREE museum.

It’s almost Father’s Day, the one time each year where we set aside our differences to praise people who make bad jokes and wear socks with sandals. And our dads deserve it: In addition to giving us life on earth, they’ve served as financial court jesters in the halls of our infinite desires, reminding us to get a real job and saying no to pair after pair of Lucky brand jeans. I mean, seriously, if we had a wooden nickel for every time our dads gave us good money advice, we’d be rich. (No, wait. We would never accept a wooden nickel, because that’s what fools do.)

This year, we celebrate dads everywhere by digging into some of their greatest financial advice hits, which is really just our way of saying “We love you, Pops.”

“Money doesn’t grow on trees.”

So far, biologists have tampered with genetics enough to create glow-in-the-dark mice, less farty cows and silk-spinning goats, but no mad scientist has braved the tallest task: a money-growing tree. That’s probably because they’re afraid of angering a whole legion of Very Serious Fathers who rely on this threat to get rooms cleaned and lawns mowed and Subway-sandwich-artist job applications submitted. Too bad advice doesn’t grow on trees either, or else your dad could take the day off, drop you in a forest, and let a maple hassle you instead.

“A penny saved is a penny earned.”

Okay, you know Benjamin Franklin was a dad because he called himself Poor Richard and was always giving advice about hard work. But despite popular opinion, America’s favorite founding father (see what we did there?) did not invent this phrase. To find the original idiom, you’d have to crack open books like 1691’s smash hit, The History of the Worthies of England, where the worthies were people like your dad, who knew that saving a penny by not spending it is like earning that penny twice. Just think about it: The 17th-century kid version of you must have saved for a long time to buy that powdered wig they’d been eyeing.

“Never spend money before you have it.”

Okay, sure, your dad might post too much on your Facebook wall, but at least he never sent you a twelve-part letter titled Canons of Conduct in Life. That dubious distinction belongs to Thomas Jefferson, who was adamant that his granddaughter Cornelia not blow dough she didn’t have yet, yo, on ribbons and ponies and a neoclassical summer home in Virginia. Oh wait, that last one was Tommy himself, who spent so much money he didn’t have on summer homes and parties that he died deep in debt. But hey, I’m sure there’s an idiom about dads not needing to be perfect to give perfect advice. Regardless, our third president really wants you to cut up that maxed-out credit card.

“Waste not, want not.”

Looking for a summer beach read that also delivers sound financial advice? Look no further than Richard Edward’s 1576 opus, The Paradise of Dainty Devices, which reminds us that “want is nexte to waste, and shame doeth synne ensue.” (Hey Dick, ya ever heard of spellcheck?!) We don’t know what Richard’s other dainty devices were, or even what a dainty device is, but we can probably all agree with his basic sentiment: If you don’t squander all the stuff you have now, you’ll have what you need in the future. So stop throwing those gold bars out the window, and finish that entire bon-bon. You’re going to need them later.

“Money is the root of all evil.”

Who wants to be a millionaire? Not the apostle Paul, who wrote a whole epistle (that’s the Bible’s version of an email) excoriating the idea of money to his disciple Timothy. Technically, Paul said that the love of money is the root of all evil, not money itself, which might not matter to you, but it matters a lot to the many, many people who write blogs about the difference. For our purposes, however, we can keep it simple. Don’t obsess about getting rich; just do what you do for the right reasons. Otherwise? You’re either a) going to hell or b) Paul will talk mad heat about you on the Bible web.

“Time is money.”

This idiom had to have been invented in the eighties, right? When 29-year-old yuppie stockbrokers were buying low and selling high while also always closing? In fact, it stretches back to ancient Greece and pops up again throughout the centuries whenever a shoemaker’s wife needed diaper money or a usurer went to collect an unpaid debt plus interest. It finally landed in Poor Richard’s Almanac, a hothouse of plagiarized advice, where Benjamin Franklin used it to harp on his favorite subject: not loafing around. Basically, if you’re wasting time, you’re not making money, and if you’re not making money, you’re wasting it. So get out there and mow that lawn, son!

“Money can’t buy happiness.”

Diamonds might be a girl’s best friend, but they’ll probably talk about her behind her back after the pool party. That’s because diamonds, like money, can’t buy the stuff that really matters: friendship, family, or a 50-foot yacht off the Bahamas joy. The philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau thought money could buy everything except morality and citizens, and the philosopher Paul McCartney knew it couldn’t buy him love. Just think about it this way: If you master this idiom, the Kardashians will be keeping up with you. Thanks, Dad!
