See The Lights At Temple Square

A holiday in Salt Lake City isn’t complete without a trip to see the lights at Temple Square. Free to the public, the lights are switched on the day after Thanksgiving and continue to shine bright until the New Year from 3:30 - 10:00 PM and from 6:00 - 8:00 AM. It’s been reported that over one million Christmas lights are lit during the Christmas season at Temple Square. 

Go On A Winter Horseback Ride

Little Haunts | October 13, 14, 20, 21, 27, and 28

The Baby Animal Celebration is the perfect pre-Easter activity for children of all ages! Train Day | May 10, 2023

On May 10th, 1869 the state of Utah helped make history by driving the “Golden Spike” at Promontory Point. This spike at Promontory Point connected the eastern and western United States made transcontinental travel and trade via rail possible. Special guest M. Russell Ballard will dedicate the Pioneer Children's Memorial mid-morning on July 20, followed by the chance to buy yummy treats. Caley's Catering is doing a $5 meal special, and vendors like Flavor Burst Ice Cream, Brigham's Donuts and more will be selling tasty food all day for an additional charge.

Pioneer Day

All of Utah will be celebrating the state’s founders on July 24. Commemorating the pioneers who built up the Beehive State, This Is the Place Heritage Park is the perfect spot for a Pioneer Day celebration. Everyday activities offered at the park will be available on this Utah holiday, as well as fun extras.

Children can come and pick up some old-fashioned taffy as it's shot out of the candy cannon down Main Street. In addition to candy and cannons, games from the early days will be going on all day long. Families can first engage with the flag ceremony and then watch a parade down Main Street. Those who love dancing can learn a pioneer dance, and those who would rather eat can participate in a watermelon eating contest.

Dog Day

Furry friends usually don't get to everywhere with their owners, but this summer they get a chance to get out of the (dog)house. Dog Day at This Is the Place Heritage Park occurs just once a year, and it’s fun for both canines and their best friends.

On Aug. 10, come meet and mingle with celebrity dogs, walk your furry friends around the park and let them cool off in the splash pad.

Intermountain All-Women Hoop Dance Competition

Nowhere else in the world can you see all-female contestants hoop dance for the title and the prize. This Is the Place Heritage Park will host for the second year the Intermountain All-Women Hoop Dance Competition.

The Beehive State is home to many hoop dancers, but competitors and performers for this competition come from all over the country. Viewers can watch the excitement of the competition unfold as the winner is announced the same day. The competition is on Aug. 24 from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the park the day of the event.

Even though summer can be a fun and simultaneously boring time for kids and families, it doesn't have to be.
