A couple of days ago I blogged about ESPN.com's call for the sports "Mt. Rushmores" of each state.
Utah's four nominees were Steve Young, LaVell Edwards, John Stockton and Karl Malone. I added a few other possibilities.
In response, I got one nomination I hadn't considered: Greg Ostertag.
That was funny enough to make me wish I'd thought of that. Another nomination someone sent in: Ryan Kaneshiro.
Some would suggest Masha Kirilenko belongs on the list of iconic Utahns, considering the publicity she generated a couple of years ago.
Here are a few other (more serious) considerations: Dany Ainge, Ladell Andersen, Zelmo Beaty, Johnny Miller, Norma Carr, Wayne Estes, Henry Marsh, Merlin Olsen, Alma Richards and Jerry Sloan.
Even Urban Meyer.
He was a short-timer, but he did have a major impact while he was here.
Clearly, ESPN isn't requiring the athlete be a native Utahn. Otherwise, Stockton and Malone wouldn't be included.
Have I left anyone important off?
