In the pointless-but-true category - which includes a lot of my columns - comes this: The BYU football practice field has the oldest tree on campus.
According to Tom Holmoe, the school's Director of Athletics, the big tree on the West side of the practice field is the aforementioned tree. When the old practice field was there, old-timers watching practice would seek it for shade. There was also a water fountain beneath.
Holmoe said tree experts at BYU verified the tree's staus. When the new practice field was built on the same spot, there was talk of razing the tree. But sentimentalists prevailed.
It will live to see yet another generation of football players seeking its shade.
Sounds to me like another good place for BYU students to get engaged.
