So top quarterback Gunner Kiel is going to Louisiana State.

Pardon me while I hyperventilate.

Sorry for the cynicism, but the news that the Indiana-raised quarterback is going to LSU excites me as much as warm soda. espn.com

I've said this before, but recruiting news — however newsworthy — should be taken for what it's worth: Not all that much. The Kiel story reminded me of a certain other can't miss star who ended up on a much different path than he expected: Jake Heaps. Remember him?

I have to admit, I still think the BYU transfer will do well at Kansas. But still. At his introductory press conference in 2009 he discussed winning championships and becoming a legendary quarterback. He wasn't particularly cocky. In fact, he was pretty modest. But he left no doubt about the plan. Everyone got excited.

Now he's on his way to another school in another part of the country.

JAKE HEAPS, RIGHT, IN HAPPIER TIMES So when I see stories like the one on Kiel, I have to sigh. Another top quarterback picks a school. He and his fans have high hopes. But so far, nothing has happened. And we will have to wait a few years to find out if anything does happen.

Business as usual.

In most cases, I'd rather read about the people that are doing something now, not several years in the future.
