Normally I'd rank Utah vs. Utah Valley in baseball pretty far down my list of must-see games.
Actually, it was nice column material, but since I was on vacation, I missed it. Nevertheless, it was
a good story. UVU was on a 32-game win streak, tied for the second-longest in college baseball history. The other two teams to win 32 in a row were Fresno State and Arizona State.
If you know anything about college baseball, you know those two schools are among the heavy hitters of the sport.
Two more wins and UVU would have tied Florida Atlantic and Texas for the all-time record. But the Wolverines ended up losing 11-10 to Utah on Tuesday.
The whole thing got me wondering, how big a deal is this?
I'd say streaks are nice, and they draw considerable attention. Tuesday's game attracted nearly 5,000 fans to Brent Brown Ballpark. At the same time, streaks don't necessarily lead to something, in which case they become a curiosity. If UVU fails in the Great West Conference Tournament, beginning next Tuesday, the streak won't mean nearly as much in the big picture.
UVU had some nice wins during the streak, including those over Arizona, BYU and Utah. Others were less exciting, such as New Jersey Institute of Technology and North Dakota State.
Yes, here's a news flash: Win streaks sometimes depend on the competition.
Still, it was a near-record, which deserves praise. How much praise? Since I'm having some technical problems adding a poll to my blog today, why not post a comment to let me know where you fall on this?
