BYU just won the national championship in rugby, which is a big deal if you're a raging rugby fan.
If you're not, this is all a bit confusing.
That's because BYU rugby represents the university, but isn't part of it. Make sense?
I didn't think so.
I don't follow much college rugby, except to know that it isn't sponsored by the NCAA or the university. So the school lets the team use its name, but it doesn't finance the program.
There are 29 rugby schools listed in the College Premier Division, which BYU won this year. By comparison, there are 120 Division I football teams and 347 basketball teams.
In claiming a College Premier Division title this year, BYU won a national championship, but not necessarily the only national championship. Davenport University is listed as this year's men's Division I national champion, after beating San Diego State.
Clear? Yup. As clear as, say, pro boxing, which has numerous competing organizations, each of which names its own weight champion.
Rugby in America is still working on organizing itself into identifiable, simple divisions. That's a good idea if it ever wants to move beyond niche sport status in the U.S.
So how big is a national championship in rugby? Some of you rugby fanatics can help me out by voting on this.
