SALT LAKE CITY — Timpview coach Nate Warner said over and over that it was too early for his team to celebrate winning the 5A girls state tennis championship.

However, after the first day of tournament play, the Thunderbirds are flying high and eager to put their third straight state title in the school’s already crowded trophy cabinet.

“It was a good day, but there’s still a lot of work left to do,” Warner said after juniors Emma Wilkinson and Kylie Woods continued their undefeated season with a win over Lauren Allen and Daniela Santos of Park City in No. 2 doubles play.

“In that last match, those girls showed a lot of heart,” he said. “They came back and helped put us in good position.”

The 5A tourney continues Saturday morning at Liberty Park. Timpview is in first place with 10 points. Park City and Highland are tied for second place with seven points and Springville and Woods Cross have five apiece.

Timpview came in heavily favored and had most of the day’s events go its way. Every T-Bird singles player — Avery Pope, Sofie Thompson and Anna Stewart — advanced two rounds with straight-set victories, and the team of Olive Esplin and Aubrey Page joined Wilkinson and Woods to move forward in doubles action.

The T-Birds already had first place reserved late in the day before things went especially their way. Wilkinson and Woods lost their first set but then impressed their coaches and fans by rallying for a 2-6, 7-6 (2), 6-3 win. A few moments earlier, Brighton sophomores Kalli Olsen and Chanel Mansell continued their impressive season by outlasting Park City’s Aly Inglish and Mayme Hansen 7-6 (7), 2-6, 6-0.

If those matches had been in Park City’s favor, the Miners could have picked up two points and pressured Timpview. Instead, Warner said he will have to try to keep his team focused with a nearly insurmountable three-point lead.

“It’s halftime and we still have a whole half to play,” he joked. “We will have a light practice tomorrow (Friday). We didn’t want to overdo it. We have to keep focused on the match ahead of us. There are a lot of points left out there.”

Park City players and fans still had reasons to smile, as sophomore Elle Martin and freshman Audrey Lord remained alive following impressive singes-play wins. Highland’s fate rides with Sophie Hastings in No. 1 singles and the No. 1 doubles team of Abby Bradford and Grace Harman. Woods Cross (Macy Richards) and Springville (Madison Galbraith) each have just one player left on Saturday’s schedule. The remaining players will be playing for individual honors, fun and another chance to enjoy the fine fall weather.

Barring an unlikely storm, Timpview will be center of attention.
