MIDWAY — The Lone Peak golf team has won state championships six of the last seven years, and the Knights are off to another strong start, taking a five-stroke lead over Layton Monday at the 6A championships at Soldier Hollow Golf Course,
Layton senior Tysen Diaz leads the individual competition after shooting a 7-under-par 65, three shots better than Weber’s Michael Erling.
Two Lone Peak golfers, Brandon Ashworth and Evan Lawrence, are tied for third with 69s, along with Josh Savage of Pleasant Grove and Cayson Wright of Corner Canyon.
Lone Peak’s Gunnar Christofferson is one of three golfers at 70 along with Carter Frisby and Layton’s Zak Richins.
Davis, which finished second last year, stands third at 289 and is followed by Corner Canyon at 293, American Fork at 295 and Weber 296. Other teams that made the cut are Pleasant Grove (304), Bingham (305), Syracuse (306), Skyridge (308) and Riverton (308).
Other Lone Peak golfers are Cooper Jones (71), Jack Arnold (75) and Parker Reese (75).
Beside Diaz and Richins, other Layton golfers are David Liechty at 73, Cooper Cannon at 76, Taggart Murray at 77 Spencer Poll at 78.
Davis has two players in the top 10 in Preston Wallace and Cole Cipriano at 71.
The 6A golfers will move over to the Silver Course for Tuesday’s second round after playing the Gold Course Monday, with tee times between 10 a.m. and noon.
