The 6A state tournament resumes this Wednesday with the quarterfinals at the University of Utah.

The top eight seeds all advanced to the quarterfinals, headlined by tournament favorite Fremont and defending state champion Bingham.

The first quarterfinal is slated for 4:10 p.m. on Wednesday between Skyridge and Syracuse.

Here’s a closer look at the eight remaining teams in the 6A state tournament.

Scoring defense: 33.6 ppg (1st in 6A)

Last state championship: 2018 (6A)

2019 postseason: Lost to Bingham 46-42 in 6A semifinals

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Win over Lone Peak in championship

Edward’s Evaluation: The tournament favorites haven’t lost a game to a Utah team all season, and it’s hard to imagine that will change this week at the University of Utah. Fremont leads the state in scoring offense and scoring defense, and has a 29-point average margin of victory. It’s only close in-state game all season was a 63-62 win at Copper Hills back on Dec. 5. Incredibly, Fremont’s five leading scorers are all underclassmen, which could be the start of a dynasty this week.

No. 2 Lone Peak Knights (18-4)

2019-2020 Schedule

Head coach: Nancy Warner (seventh year)

Region: First in Region 4 with a 10-0 record

Quarterfinals: vs. Copper Hills, Wednesday,, 7:30 p.m. (at Utah)

How advanced to quarterfinals:

  • First round: Bye
  • Second round: Lone Peak 63, Layton 21

Best victory: 43-28 win at Westlake on Jan. 14

Top contributors:

  • #11 Jane Leroy, Sr., G (11.9 ppg, 3.4 rpg, 2.5 apg, 2.3 spg)
  • #14 Abby Conlee, Sr., G (9.9 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 1.2 apg)
  • #0 Kailey Woolston, Fr., G (9.8 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 1.2 spg)
  • #20 Makale Easton, Sr., G (8.7 ppg, 1.6 rpg, 1.4 apg, 1.1 spg)
  • #4 Makeili Ika, Fr., G. (5.1 ppg, 1.8 rpg, 2.1 apg, 1.2 spg)

Scoring offense: 54.1 ppg (5th in 6A)

Scoring defense: 40.9 ppg (6th in 6A)

Last state championship: 1999 (4A)

2019 postseason: Lost to Copper Hills 51-34 in 6A semifinals

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Fremont in championship

Edward’s Evaluation: Lone Peak tore through Region 4 with a perfect record, and didn’t skip a beat in a big second round win over Layton. Balance has been one of the keys all season, and it will definitely be critical against a high-scoring Copper Hills team in the quarterfinals. Perimeter defense will especially be important against quick Grizzlies point guard Eleyana Tafisi. If Lone Peak takes care of business in the quarters, a potential third game against region foe Westlake awaits in the semis.

No. 3 Westlake Thunder (19-4)

2019-2020 Schedule

Head coach: Michael O’Connor (fourth year)

Region: Tied for second in Region 4 with a 6-4 record

Quarterfinals: vs. Bingham, Wednesday, 9:10 p.m. (at Utah)

How advanced to quarterfinals:

  • First round: Bye
  • Second round: Westlake 56, Jordan 54

Best victory: 53-48 win vs. Skyridge on Feb. 7

Top contributors:

  • #40 Susan Fano, Jr., C (13.6 ppg, 2.8 rpg)
  • #22 Halle Hester, Jr., G (9.3 ppg, 4.6 rpg, 2.2 apg, 1.3 spg)
  • #15 Jill Lungren, So., F (7.2 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 1.2 apg)
  • #25 Hayley Payne, Sr., G (6.1 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 2.8 apg, 2.0 spg)
  • #33 Brielle Bastian, Sr., G. (4.9 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 2.7 apg)

Scoring offense: 54.0 ppg (6th in 6A)

Scoring defense: 38.7 ppg (4th in 6A)

Last state championship: None

2019 postseason: Lost to Copper Hills 53-36 in 6A quarterfinals

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Bingham in quarterfinals

Edward’s Evaluation: It was a wild ride for Westlake in region play as it split with Skyridge and American Fork and then lost both games against Lone Peak. In the second round it barely held on to beat Jordan. Against defending state champion Bingham in the quarterfinals, the Thunder will need to be sharp from the outset because most of Miners key contributors from last year’s championship run are back.

No. 4 Syracuse Titans (19-3)

2019-2020 Schedule

Head coach: Braden Hamblin (second year)

Region: Second in Region 1 with a 12-2 record

Quarterfinals: vs. Skyridge, Wednesday, 4:10 p.m. (at Utah)

How advanced to quarterfinals:

  • First round: Bye
  • Second round: Syracuse 50, American Fork 41

Best victory: 28-21 win at Davis on Jan. 7

Top contributors:

  • #25 Baylee Sanders, Jr., G (10.8 ppg, 1.2 apg, 1.4 spg)
  • #35 Rachel Godfrey, Jr., F/C (9.6 ppg, 3.6 rpg)
  • #23 Whitney Sorenson, So., G/F. (9.5 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 1.2 apg, 1.1 spg)
  • #3 Rainee Schenck, Sr., G (7.0 ppg, 1.0 rpg, 1.3 apg, 1.1 spg)
  • #30 Ambra Hacker, Jr., F (5.2 ppg, 2.1 rpg)

Scoring offense: 52.3 ppg (9th in 6A)

Scoring defense: 37.4 ppg (3rd in 6A)

Last state championship: 2012 (5A)

2019 postseason: Lost to Westlake 53-37 in 6A first round

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Skyridge in quarterfinals

Edward’s Evaluation: Syracuse only lost three games all season, and two of them were against region foe Fremont. The Titans would love another shot at the tourney favorites, and they can get it with a quarterfinal win on Wednesday. Defending the perimeter will be key as Skyridge is one of the better shooting teams in 6A. Syracuse’s defense ranked third in 6A throughout the season.

No. 5 Skyridge Falcons (17-6)

2019-2020 Schedule

Head coach: Gabriel Roberts (first year)

Region: Tied for second in Region 4 with a 6-4 record

Quarterfinals: vs. Syracuse, Wednesday, 4:10 p.m. (at Utah)

How advanced to quarterfinals:

  • First round: Bye
  • Second round: Skyridge 53, Hunter 42

Best victory: 47-45 win vs. Copper Hills on Dec. 19

Top contributors:

  • #3 Ally Blackham, Jr., G (14.7 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 4.8 apg, 3.2 spg)
  • #22 Keylee Melling, Sr., G (10.4 ppg, 2.5 rpg, 1.4 apg, 1.4 spg)
  • #14 Kylee Holland, Sr., G (9.4 ppg, 1.6 rpg, 1.8 apg, 1.4 spg)
  • #40 Brook Lundell, Sr., F (8.6 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 1.3 apg, 1.2 spg)
  • #0 Teagan Gray, So., G (4.2 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 1.8 apg, 1.4 spg)

Scoring offense: 53.8 ppg (7th in 6A)

Scoring defense: 45.6ppg (14th in 6A)

Last state championship: None

2019 postseason: Loss to Corner Canyon 58-53 in 5A semifinals

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Fremont in semifinals

Edward’s Evaluation: At the start of region play Skyridge occupied the top spot in the RPI rankings, but it eventually fell to fifth as it dropped four games in region play. The shots stopped falling for the Falcons during the rough stretch, and it’s no secret what needs to happen against Syracuse in the quarterfinals to try and advance. If the 3-pointers are falling in the quarterfinals they’ve got a chance.

No. 6 Bingham Miners (16-6)

2019-2020 Schedule

Head coach: Charron Mason (seventh year)

Region: Tied for first in Region 3 with a 7-3 record

Quarterfinals: vs. Westlake, Wednesday, 9:10 p.m. (at Utah)

How advanced to quarterfinals:

  • First round: Bye
  • Second round: Bingham 43, Pleasant Grove 30

Best victory: 72-53 win at Copper Hills on Jan. 9

Top contributors:

  • #12 Ameleya Angilau, Sr. (12.4 ppg, 1.5 rpg, 3.6 apg, 1.7 spg)
  • #35 Jaycee Lichtie, Sr. (12.1 ppg, 8.7 rpg, 1.1 apg, 2.2 spg)
  • #30 Samantha Holman, Sr. (10.3 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.4 spg)
  • #20 Sierra Lichtie, So. (6.8 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 1.6 apg, 1.0 spg)
  • #22 Madison Jones, Sr. (3.5 ppg, 3.6 rpg, 1.6 apg)

Scoring offense: 53.3 ppg (8th in 6A)

Scoring defense: 43.5 ppg (10th in 6A)

Last state championship: 2019 (6A)

2019 postseason: Win over Copper Hills 46-41 in 6A championship

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Lone Peak in semifinals

Edward’s Evaluation: The defending state champs didn’t exactly build a ton of momentum heading into the playoffs as they dropped three regions games, and were 3-2 over its final five. The experience is there to make a run, but the Miners will need to match Westlake’s defensive mentality in the quarterfinals to try and march on this week.

No. 7 Copper Hills Grizzlies (17-7)

2019-2020 Schedule

Head coach: Ben Morley (11th year)

Head coach: Tied for first in Region 3 with a 7-3 record

Quarterfinals: vs. Lone Peak, Wednesday, 7:30 p.m. (at Utah)

How advanced to quarterfinals:

  • First round: Copper Hills 73, Cyprus 29
  • Second round: Copper Hills 73, Riverton 62

Best victory: 49-46 win at Bingham on Jan. 30

Top contributors:

  • #12 Eleyana Tafisi, Sr., G (13.1 ppg, 2.3 rpg, 4.3 apg, 2.0 spg)
  • #3 Abby McVey, Sr., G (10.8 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 1.4 apg, 1.5 spg)
  • #42 Carlin Shepherd, Sr., P (9.6 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 1.0 spg)
  • #24 Lenisi Fineanganofo, Sr., P (8.2 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.1 spg)
  • #30 Sam Rollins, Sr., G (7.8 ppg, 7.9 rpg, 2.5 apg, 1.8 spg)

Scoring offense: 60.1 ppg (2nd in 6A)

Scoring defense: 48.8 ppg (17th in 6A)

Last state championship: None

2019 postseason: Lost to Bingham 46-41 in 6A championship

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Lone Peak in quarterfinals

Edward’s Evaluation: Last year’s 6A runner-ups played a very tough schedule both in the preseason and in region play, which shows as it lost seven games. Most of those losses were close though, including a one-point loss to No. 1 Fremont back in December, and the Grizzlies are certainly capable of making a deep run again this week. It faces a difficult quarterfinal game against No. 2 Lone Peak, one of the top defensive teams in 6A.

No. 8 Herriman Mustangs (17-6)

2019-2020 Schedule

Head coach: Kent Smith (second year)

Head coach: Tied for third in Region 3 with a 6-4 record

Quarterfinals: vs. Fremont, Wednesday, 5:50 p.m. (at Utah)

How advanced to quarterfinals:

  • First round: Herriman 61, West 25
  • Second round: Herriman 60, Davis 40

Best victory: 58-50 win at Skyridge on Dec. 31

Top contributors:

  • #3 Lexi Jensen, So., G (12.1 ppg, 3.5 rpg, 2.2 apg, 3.1 spg)
  • #54 Callie Davis, Sr., C (9.5 ppg, 8.0 rpg, 1.2 apg, 1.6 spg)
  • #15 Jayda VanDyke, Sr., G/F (9.4 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 3.4 apg, 2.3 spg)
  • #12 Kylie Cheesmen, Jr., F/C (7.3 ppg, 4.0 rpg)
  • #21 Ainzlee Enger, Jr., G (5.1 ppg, 3.9 rpg, 2.1 apg, 2.4 spg)

Scoring offense: 54.7 ppg (3rd in 6A)

Scoring defense: 41.8 ppg (7th in 6A)

Last state championship: None

2019 postseason: Loss to Fremont 56-39 in 6A quarterfinals

Deseret News prep editor James Edward’s bracket: Loss to Fremont in quarterfinals

Edward’s Evaluation: A year later, Herriman is in the exact same situation facing Fremont in the quarterfinals. Last year it lost by 17 points, and to have any hope of a different outcome this week Herriman’s sometimes potent offense will need to play easily its best game of the season, and then hope it can somehow slow down Fremont as well. It’s a tall task, but with wins over Copper Hills, Skyridge and Bingham this year it has proven it can compete and win against great competition.
