Los Angeles Lakers star Dwight Howard wished he had told Kobe Bryant how much he appreciated him before he died, USA Today reports.

What happened: Howard still felt the grief of losing Bryant — who died in late January — after the Lakers’ recent 129-102 win over the San Antonio Spurs.

  • He said he wished he and Bryant had cleared the air after they had a tough relationship seven years back, according to USA Today.
  • Howard: “A lot of people thought me and Kobe hated each other. There were times we just didn’t understand each other. I didn’t get a chance to tell him how appreciative I was of our time together and how thankful I was to be back here in LA. It’s pretty hard for me.”
  • Howard: “I took it pretty hard, the death of Kobe. My heart is with the family and all the families that were affected and Lakers Nation.”
  • Howard: “All year long, I wanted to show him that I was going to do whatever it takes to help this team win. I’ve been wearing his shoes since the season started. I wanted him in the dunk contest.”

Bigger picture: Howard said Bryant’s death helped the Lakers learn how to be grateful each day, according to the New York Post.

  • Howard: “For all of us here we got to be appreciative for the time we have on this Earth. We can take any moment, take any body or take any thing for granted.

What’s next: The bodies of Kobe Bryant and Gianna Bryant have been returned to their families. The family has yet to announce funeral plans, according to the Deseret News.
