The 2020 high school softball season gets underway this week for teams in Class 6A. To prepare fans for the upcoming season, the Deseret News has put together capsules for every team in 6A. Every coach was invited to participate and submit information.

The region rankings are based on coaches preseason projections.

There are two new softball coaches in 6A this year: Todd Street (Davis) and Weber (TBD)

Here are the 6A teams and players to watch this upcoming season.

Region 1

1. Clearfield Falcons

2019 record: 14-11 (fourth in Region 1 with a 6-6 record)

2019 postseason: Lost to Copper Hills in 6A first round: Eliminated by Fremont in 6A one-loss bracket

Coach comment: “Our region is strong and honestly, anything can happen. Anyone can beat anyone on any given day from top to bottom and I think that says a lot about the coaches and the athletes we have here up north in 6A. We’ve been working hard to develop our team the past two years and we’ve taken some lumps in the process as we’ve had a very young, but talented core. We expect to see that hard work pay off this season in the way they play and the relationships they build. If the girls play together as a Falcon Family and take it one pitch at a time like we know they can, the sky’s the limit for this group of athletes. Can’t wait to coach them and help bring them together as softball sisters. Falcons for life.”

  • Emily Dority, All-State pitcher/SS, Jr.
  • Berklee Marx, 2nd Team All-Region OF, Jr.

Coach comment: “The Bingham Miners remain young with only one senior (Alayna Haas) in the lineup. However, many of their underclassmen saw time last year as freshman and sophomores as the Miners finished fourth at state. Surrounded by some strong incoming freshman and a relatively experienced group of sophomores that saw a lot of playing time last year, juniors Emily Dority, Averi Hanny and Berklee Marx will anchor the youth movement. Pitching should be strong with Dority and Hanny both being named first team All-State last year as sophomores. The Miners will be battle-tested week in and week out in a very competitive Region 3 that fields well-coached teams that have played in all of the last seven state championship games, winning five of them. That, along with a strong nonregion schedule, will force this young crew to mature quickly as they compete with some of the best teams in the state.”

Coach comment: “Copper Hills is looking forward to another year with strong teams being added to the region along with the teams we have had in years past. We have a relatively young team this year that will get tested early on, but we have some good senior leaders this year that are ready to finish what they started and help the younger girls grow. As always, our keys to success will be coming together as a team and avoiding the letdowns that could come with the new RPI system, not being concerned with how other teams are ranking out, and playing from the first pitch to the last pitch of the season.”

This year we have one senior and two juniors in the program and I am expecting us to have a better year. We are young, but returning All-State players Halle Carpenter and Jerika Fitting should lead the way. Our goal is to win Region 4 and go from there.”
