Twitter tears: BYU edged out by North Carolina in national poll championship bout

The Cougars held a narrow lead throughout before a late run on votes gave the championship narrowly to the Tar Heels for best college basketball fans in the country.

BYU lost by a slight margin to North Carolina in the championship of a Fox College Hoops Twitter poll that set out to crown the nation’s top college basketball fans.

In yet another wildly popular Twitter poll, BYU was edged out in the championship round by North Carolina. This one involved voting for the best college basketball fans set forth by Fox College Hoops, with the Cougars and Tar Heels weaving through a field of 64 to meet up in the championship round.

BYU held a slight lead throughout most of the voting before a late run by North Carolina secured the championship:

It’s hard to assign exact meaning to the results of a Twitter poll, considering the high probability of bots purchased to lend votes. But, if nothing else, BYU’s prowess in generating votes certainly indicates a highly-engaged and passionate fanbase few schools can compare with.

It’s something that caught the notice of recent BYU men’s basketball transfer Matt Haarms, who added a message of encouragement to the BYU faithful during voting,

As always, several of BYU’s most notable alumni chimed in with hopes of influencing the final outcome. Among those were Utah Senator Mitt Romney and BYU basketball legend Jimmer Fredette.
