Corner Canyon’s Jackson Light (74) hoists the state championship trophy after Corner Canyon rolled over American Fork 49-14 in the 6A state high school football game at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City on Friday, Nov. 22, 2019.

There’s a new preseason top dog in Utah for the first time in a decade.

Corner Canyon is the preseason No. 1 in the Deseret News statewide top 25 football rankings, bouncing Bingham which had been the preseason No. 1 for the past 10 years.

The Chargers are coming off an undefeated 6A state championship season and a MaxPreps national ranking, and with eight returning starters on offense is the clear team to beat again.

The biggest hole to replace is at quarterback with the graduation of 6A MVP Cole Hagen, but Corner Canyon’s offense got a big boost with the transfer of Roy quarterback Jaxson Dart in the offseason.

Even though Bingham has fallen from its customary perch as preseason No. 1, it could certainly end up there in November.

With Dave Peck back as head coach, Bingham is loaded with experience with nine returning offensive starters and seven returning defensive starters.

The last time Bingham wasn’t pegged as the preseason favorite by the coaches was back in 2009. It went on to win the state championship anyway.

All that experience for both Corner Canyon and Bingham will be on display in Week 3 when Corner Canyon travels to Bingham. A year ago the Chargers dominated the matchup, winning 56-28.

Lone Peak checks in at No. 3 in the preseason rankings after a wild 2019 season in which it was forced to forfeit five games. It still marched to the semifinals before losing to Corner Canyon, and it has the depth and experience to be in the same position again in 2020.

American Fork has been the bridesmaid each of the past two years in 6A, but with Maddox Madsen back at quarterback this year along with five other offensive starters, the Cavemen figure to be in the thick of the 6A race again this year.

Rounding out the preseason top 10 — which is correlated to the preseason coaches class-by-class rankings — is No. 5 East, No. 6 Orem, No. 7 Timpview, No. 8 Pleasant Grove, No. 9 Skyridge and No. 10 Herriman.
